I'm having jaw reconstruction surgery in 2 phases...the first one is on Tuesday and the major one is in late July. I am having reconstruction of my TM joints and my jaw will be wired shut for 6 weeks post op. Because I already take oral methadone and oxycodone for chronic back pain in tablet form, I will be receiving all my meds in their liquid forms plus Dilaudid rectal suppositories for post-op pain until I can swallow pills again.

It isn't pleasant, but you CAN insert any oral tablet rectally. It WILL work just as well as oral use. Or you can crush your hydro tabs and mix with water. But I would give a call to the doctor and ask for something already prepared for easy swallowing (liquid/suspensions) or a rectal suppository form such as Dilaudid.

Good luck...I certainly am not looking forward to my surgeries!
