By all means HAVE THE SURGERY! Your intestines (bowel) can prolapse through the muscle wall hole (hernia) and this can be a life-threatening emergency (if the bowel is constricted and starts to die--you only have about 6 hours to get it corrected or tissue dies!) Unless you want to end up with emergency surgery, possibly a colostomy or even death--get it done.
I'm not trying to be an alarmist, but this isn't something to mess around with -ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE HAVING SUDDEN, SEVERE PAIN (did you have a fever???) ...PLEASE get it checked out and see if it is SAFE to wait!
-------------------- Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.
When I was a child I too had an abdominal hernia right above the bellybutton. Do have the surgery, it's not something that can wait. The surgery was not too painful and I missed very little school and this was in the 60's. I have a scar about an inch and 1/2 and this was so long ago so Im sure surgery has come quite a way since then.
My sister had this problem, and she had to have emergency surgery. I would suggest that you consult with your doctor to see how severe this is and get a second opinion, if possible (but not if time is of the essence). Your work would certainly understand, and the money issues come way down on the list where your health is concerned.
