Someone diagnose me!
      #168005 - 06/10/04 09:57 PM

Hi all,

I'm a 22 y/o female with a history of kidney stones, pylonephritis, and a very long history of recurrent UTIs. Last May, I had a ureteroscopy to remove a stubborn calcium oxalate stone; the pain was excrutiating.

The following September, I started getting a dull ache in my back mid-way between my hip bone and the bottom of my ribcage. I saw my GP who did a urinalysis and determined that I had blood in my urine with no sign of infection. He then sent me in for a CT scan thinking I had stones, but nothing showed up.

Now it's 9 months later, and the pain has never really gone away... it comes and goes. Sometimes I feel nothing at all; at others, I feel like i've been kicked in the back. And again, this only happens on the left side.

A couple of weeks ago, i decided to go to my GP again since the pain never resolved itself. A urinalysis revealed a small amount of blood in my urine (which i've been told is sometimes normal for some people) with no indication of infection. He took a KUB (kidney-ureter-bladder x-ray), but no stones were revealed, and then referred me to my urologist.

I explained everything to the urologist today, and he seemed to think that the kidney was not the culprit. His first response was to question the ovary, but a laparoscopy last month revealed that I don't even have a left ovary or fallopian tube! He has ordered a VCUG and IVP to "prove" that it's not the kidney. If he's so certain, I don't want to have to go through a VCUG!!! Then again, I'm fed up with this mysterious, constant ache.

Anyone have any clues as to what else could be causing this?!

I had similar symptoms & they never could diagnose it. After about 8 months of off again, on again & increasingly excruciating pain I ended up in the ER. Luckily there was an excellent OB/GYN that had them do an internal ultrasound & they found that I had a necrotized (dead) ovary the size of an orange! Gross, huh? What was happening was that cysts were growing & then going away & finally one grew so big that it strangled the ovary. I KNOW this is NO help to you if you don't have an ovary on that side. Sometimes pain radiates though. It could be something going on on the other side of your body. Good luck. I was in more pain than childbirth. I hope they can help you. Keep at it. Insist. Maybe they should do an MRI?
