Hydro and DHC cross tolerance
      #162347 - 05/15/04 03:23 PM

Does anyone have experience substituting DHC for 10/325s to take an APAP break? Are their effects and tolerances mutually exclusive, or are they like a 1:1 interchange when measuring opiate tolerance? I figured since hydro is not converted to morphine in the brain and DHC is, they would have totally different effect on the receptors. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

why would you figure that? of course they cause cross tolerance. it doesnt matter that one metabolizes to morphine and the other doesnt, they are both mu agonists and another thing is they are practically the same chemically.

totally different effect on receptors? huhhhh?? they have a totally similar effect on receptors, both mu agonists

If you have oodles of time and a medical dictionary handy, here are some good papers on the subject of opioid cross-tolerance.

Changing Concepts of Tolerance to Opioids: What the Cancer Patient Has Taught Us
Pain control in palliative care
Incomplete, Asymmetric, and Route-Dependent Cross-Tolerance between Oxycodone and Morphine
Multiple Receptors Involved in Peripheral 2, µ, and A1 Antinociception, Tolerance, and Withdrawal
[Dmt1]DALDA is Highly Selective and Potent at m Opioid Receptors, but is not Cross-Tolerant with Systemic Morphine
Opiate rotation, incomplete cross-tolerance, and hyperalgesic metabolites

These are not PRECISELY what you are looking for but they do provide very in-depth discussion on receptors involved on tolerance, cross-tolerance and cross-dependence. Few of the articles address hydrocodone and dihydrocodeine directly as related to each other. Most of the discussion is about morphine, sorry.

Anyone that can explain in dummy language please do so. Can you quit the hydro and start the dhc with no w/d's? And what is the dosage? Thankyou very much.

Foster, Yes and thank God you can do that! DHC is the only thing that has saved my butt from WD for the past 3 years when my Oxy prescription was unexpectedly cut off. Much, much better than codeine in my opinion. More energy as well and you can function completely fine on them. They are a lifesaver. The only problem is NOBODY has them anymore and I'm down to about 2 months supply. If anybody knows of a reliable e-mail contact for DHC, please shoot me an private mail. Thanks !

BTW - Why did DHC drop off the face of the planet for the last 6 months? What's going on over there in Europe?

Hi,

I've had to switch between the two in a different lifetime, and found the dihydrocodeine very helpful indeed in pain control. Just as good as the hydro, providing you take an equianalgesic dose.

The only thing is the side effects. Whereas hydro may make one sleepy and happy (for lack of better educated words), the DH can make you a little jittery, a bit like a coffee high, in my opinion. Oh, and quite the itchy nose!

It's mostly a Euro-opioid, and I get the feeling they've only recently begun cracking down on its import here. It is, in fact, a sched. II drug, so please, watch your back!
