Need answer ASAP regarding Norco quantity
      #165287 - 05/28/04 03:08 AM

I have been on generic Norco for months at 10/325. Lortab at other strengths for several years.

I have been on the Duragsic patch which I have found a way to sort of make work and now I can not find it due to a shortage in the Dallas, Texas area. And I will say that even though I did get the patch to more or less work, it still leaves much to be desired.

i see my family doctor this afternoon (May 28) and I will check back to see any answers before I go to my doctor. I consider you the experts that I can turn to.

So with this in mind, I am taking 4 Norco 10/325 as my ONLY pain killer. Then I was given this Norco (same 120 quantity a month but I think he hopes I can use less of the Norco as the patch kicks in) as breakthough medication and given the patch as primary medication. This has been going on for 4 months.

It is unlikely I will find the patch today since I have been trying constantly for over two weeks and one drugs store will have one box and another not have any, etc.

It would be a lot simplier if I could just stay on a class 3 drug since in Texas, you can have the orginal presicption plus 5 refills and this is a lot easier than dealing with a class 2 drug.

I think that I could get by with 5 ( I prefer 6 norco) 10/325 a month. I know about the tylenol effect is bad on my liver but I should be under it and I do not plan to stay indefinately on 5-6 norco's even if I get that persecibed today. I am thinking a few months and maybe get back on the patch or something else.

I know oxy time release would be wonderful and I would love to try the narcotic lollipops as breakthough pain medication and get of the norco completely if I could prescibe myself.

My question. Disregarding the tylenol limit, is 150 to 180 norco's considered a lot for a GENERAL FAMILY DOCTOR to prescribe? I know that this also varies by state so I would appreciate if any Texas readers see this and know if this is too much to please write me before I see my doctor this afternoon.

This is what I am going to suggest since my doctor did not even know about the patch supply problem until about a week ago thanks to me. The drug representative never mentioned a supply problem to the doctor and according to his staff, my doctor had been continuing to prescibe the patch.

I want something that works, I would prefer no class 2 drugs which limits me or if I have to go to class 2, then one that is readily availiable and works.

For some reason, my doctor has an aversion (but does prescibe oxy products but not to me even though he once offered it to me and I stupidly turned him down about 2 years ago. Might be why he won't prescribe oxy now).

I have the records to back up just about anything that could be prescribed in my opinion with a 4th MRI down about a mont ago showing my back deteriorationg more from the one done in year 2000. i also get social security disability. And those in the know, realize how hard it is to get and I got it on the first try with no appeals. I also get my early governent pension due to disability. Plus the before mentioned records. So I am not a junkie looking for a high.

Any info would ge greatly appreciated. I will check back about 12:00 pm central time for any recommendations.

Thanks

I am sorry to say a count of 150-180 is VERY high for a PCP. That WILL draw scrutiny.

IMO what you need is to break up your meds and add a potentiator.

First, add promethazine. It takes care of nausea and potentiates the hydro.
I take 50MG, but have been on it for years. You may want to go with the 50MG pills (FOR SURE) because of costs and break them in half.

Second, add cimetadine (Tagamet) 400mg. Since you have insurance, it's probably best to get a script of 60 generics.

Before you take your hydro, take one of each. About 1/2 hour later, add your hydro. Upon your re-dose (6 hours), take all three at the same time.

The cimetadine will prolong the hydro in your system and the promethazine will potentiate it.

Anyway...(1) Hydro (2) cimetadine 400 mg (3) promethazine 50 mg

Since 120 is still pretty much for a PCP (you didn't mention if he was a pain mgmt. Dr. [PMD] ) you may want to do go with my advise (I am NOT a medical professional and MY advice is that, MY opinion. Please discuss this with a qualified MD).

Regarding the patch, Walgreens WILL ALWAYS order your med and have it in the next day. Since you are looking at a Holiday weekend, Tuesday is probably your best bet. Despite the bad looks and hassle, Walgreens has one of the biggest distributors in the USA. I find it hard to believe they are out. Also...being in Dallas, they have access to OK and NM states supplies that are "right next door". So, if these three states are "out" I would calll their bluff.

If it's a no-go, have you tried "mepergan fortis?" It's Demerol w/ promethazine and works GREAT. It is also curiously freely prescribed (for patients w/ a valid need).

Still get your triplicate (good for 7 days) and play the waiting game. They WANT your business bevcause the patch is EXPENSIVE and they make good money off of it. If you have the nerve, talk to a manager first. Just go in and say: "I need to speak with mgmt." "Why?" "It's personal, let me speak to the manager, please"

Bottom line is that 120 is probably your limit. You could ask but when you start getting these filled, red flags will pop at the pharmacy. I KNOW it sucks, but we are in the USA. Narcotics are for cancer patients and the half dead - NOT!!!

PM me if you want an OP who will RX more than 120. Believe it or not QTY #180-240 is not that much more money than QTY #120. Sorry folks, I will not blindly post or reply to PM's asking "who". This person needs help.

Good luck and see you in PM land.

Keystone.

There's a PCP here in my hometown who wrote a freind of mine 240 10/500's ( I was appaled cuz thats 4K mg of tylenol per day) and he also wrote him 120 15mg roxicodones. This month he got switched to 84 40mg OC's, and 84 20 mg OC's. He's only been going since February. As soon as I get my MRI's back from my orthopedic on 6-3 I'm going to go to this doc. I've been referred to a rheumatologist, but I cant get in until 8-18, and I'm not going to wait that long. I'm tired of being in pain and the hydro wearing off, I'm going to try and get on an extended release med with some breakthrough meds also. I'm glad I have good insurance!!!! Take care
