Why I am here...UPDATE!
      #133176 - 01/31/04 08:57 PM

Finally....I have a firm diagnosis for my back pain. I just found out last week that I have a herniated disk in the Thoracic region of my back. The worst part of it is that 4 months ago, my "terrible" doctor that I had, ordered an MRI for the pain that I was having, only ordered it in the Lumbar region. After I had repeatedly told him where I was hurting. Well needless to say, I had suspected that he was kind of a "quack" and had since started going to a different doc. It didn't take him long to realize when he was out of his league, and send me to an orthepedic doc, and it took a week for him to make this new diagnosis. Its funny, everyone around me treated me like I was just "drug-seeking", because my old "quack" doc could never come up with a firm diagnosis on what was causing my pain. Like it was all just in my head. Alot of you out there probably know exactly what I mean. Well, I am very happy to finally know just what was causing my pain. This week I am getting a block on the nerve that is being effected. Hopefully that will give me the relief that I really need. It gets really frustrating putting up with chronic pain for such a long time, and nobody believes you, or just doesn't want to help.
P.S. I am thinking about a lawsuit to that old "crappy" doc that I had. Since he ordered the MRI in the wrong area of my back, I have accrued about $1000 worth of medical bills.

What validation! I love it! I'm sorry for your pain, but glad that you found out the source.

Yes, a lot of these docs love playing doctors, but they seem to be do just that, "playing" like they're doctors. I think they just love the title they carry and could give a rats a$$ what's wrong with us.

A lot of them do look at you like you're drug seeking and would rather dismiss you rather than take the time to investigate further. Some things just aren't as obvious as others.

Needless to say, your doctor was wrong, wrong, wrong! He inaccurately tested you and he inaccurately treated you. You bet you have a case. You're absolutely right to be compensated for your losses. And it doesn't sound like a frivilous suit...you just want to be reimbursed for what he took you for. Quack is for certain. What a jerk!

I'm glad you're finally going to be treated the way you should be. Good luck to you and please keep us posted on your progress.

I really sympathize, DTZ... I, too, was FINALLY diagnosed with DDD at T7-T8 after 12 years of chronic pain and being told it was just "muscle spasms". It is vindicating.

Now, I hope you do get relief from the block. I'd do ANYTHING to get rid of this hot poker between my vertebra. I go see a PM doc tomorrow morning, but I have NO expectations. That way I can't be disappointed or upset. I just tell it like it is and hope for reasonable treatment.

Good luck on your treatment and please let me know if the epidural works.

Since 1997, and most specifically since Sept. 2000, I have been practically an invalid due to severe CP. I keep tearing the annulus at L-5,S-1. Had IDET surgery on L-4,5 in early 2001, but L-5 was too shot. Well, I finally have had enough, and this week am determined to find out why this continues to happen. It is always degenerative disc, L-5, S-1 and annular tear. While always in CP, these "tears" which happen several times in a year, send me off the pain scale. I keep being told exercise, get epidurals, and use a patch, but nothing holds when these "tears" occur. I finally had an informal opinion from a board certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine doctor (not in my state, nor do I know, just through a friend mentioning my symtoms), and he said to have them look at degenerative disc changes and/or that the pain may be stemming from the facet joints. In my opinion, both have disinegrated A LOT, but I go for a second epi tomorrow, and have asked them to review all MRI's, CT, Discogram, etc., and in addition, to do a nerve block with the epidural, or something at the facet joints in particular. I am going back to a neuro on Tuesday (haven't seen one since 2000.) I want to get to the bottom of this - but to date, it has taken an informal opinion which has given me hope - which I just got middle of last week, and a lot of research on my part since then to start to strongly advocate for myself. All I've been told through the years is that everyone has degenerative discs, esp. at L-5,S-1 after about age 40. So who am I to have the pain? Most people don't even feel it. But I doubt that anyone tears the annulus as many times a year as I do. I finally had come to the conclusion that it never heals, so therefore it is always torn, but now I don't think that is so. I sure am rambling, sorry. I am happy that two of you have finally gotten the correct diagnosis. I know what you have been going through. I am waiting for a correct diagnosis. However, how are we supposed to know what is going on? Isn't that why we go to these specialists? Now, I have some information thanks to a dear friend, and can go forward and advocate and push myself.

I don't know about suing your doctor, but you may wish to try and recoup all of your medical costs associated with the MRI, pain meds, etc., from that doctor for ordering the wrong MRI. I think just a letter from an attorney would be enough, leaving the idea of suing unspoken, and see what happens. The doctor may well be willing to settle and pay the cost of your medical bills. Hope you feel better. I am going back to my heating pad.

Take care, Shasta

Finally I am getting my doc's to see that I really
am in pain. I get so sick and tired of these doc's that think that they are "God" and practically make you kiss their feet for any pain meds at all. I finally got my doc to give me some 90 day supplies for Tramadol, and 3 other ones. At least that will save me major bucks. It just seems like when a person is really in pain, why do you have to fight with these people just for a few pain meds like even mild ones like Tramadol...What the heck gives. I did go to a neurolgist and he is starting me all over on some muscle relaxers,(zanaflex) and Voltaren for anti-inflamatory and I'll swear that it is actually starting to help me. He wanted to take a fresh approach because I think that he could see right away that my regular doc's had done a pretty Best if kept off the board poor job with helping me. I guess time will tell. He wanted to give these meds at least two months to see if they work because my next stop will be to a pain management specialist. I don't want to have to go to one of them and be half loopy on narcotics all of the time.
