weird withdrawal
      #163610 - 05/20/04 09:02 PM

Goodness! I am going through w/d. I have taken only & I swear on the Bible, 2 Ultram a day in the AM. I take 1 mg. Xanax at night to sleep & then the 2 Ultram in the AM. Well...dumb me. I let my rx for Ultram expire and since I don't take that many I figured I had a long time to go. Well, I ran out yesterday & am supposed to get an OP order by the 24th. I have run out before & never had a problem re:w/d. Today, however has been awful. The whole sheebang. Cold sweats, hot sweats, back pain, exhaustion, feeling lethargic, feeling anxious, you name it. HORRIBLE. Good grief. Maybe by the 24th this will all go away & then no more Ultram for me! I can't take this. I have to function. I'll deal w/the AM back pain. I probably need a new mattress. Plus, my lower back pain gets really bad around my period. That is what the Ultram was prescribed for in the first place.

Wow, that's awful! I really feel for you. I had no idea that Ultram could do that, in fact, I had no idea that Ultram was anything more than a suped up Motrin. And, who would have guessed that your 2-per-day dosage could cause such an effect? I would think that 2-per-day hydro wouldn't even be enough to cause such irritation??!!

My thoughts go out to you.

I agree. It IS the weirdest thing on earth. Almost as bad as what the people that have large hydro dosages talk about. I forgot to mention ringing in my ears. Like I said, I've done w/out for days at a time before & never had this happen. I never got "high" from the Ulram at all or even thought it really DID anything. Boy...I can tell you this. I will NEVER go w/out my 2-50mg a day from the time I get them. Unless of course all of this has gone away by the 24th & then I won't start taking them again. Geez. I quit smoking 10 years ago & it was hard. This is literally making me sick.
I'm with you. I always thought Ultram was no big deal & like I said it never took away horrible pain or seemed to be like you said, "anything more than supped up Motrin."

PS
In other posts I had read about people saying that Ultram w/d was worse than hydro. Who would've thought a 2 pill a day "habit" would be this bad. Wow! I can't imagine if I had been popping them all the time!

Ultram withdrawl was WAY worse than Hydro w/d. I thought I had the flu...body aches, sinus problems + all the other yucky stuff want2bcalm mentioned.
I was shocked to learn I withdrawing. When Ultram was first released it was touted as the "non narcotic, non addictive" alternative to narcotics. I'v had a couple of Dr's say they've quit prescribing it as a "safe alternative".
I hope you start feeling better want2bcalm.

Thank you Scar. It is pretty scary out there now anyhow. So I guess no more OP's for me.

is there any chance you may actually have a FLU? often we have bad colds, flu, etc. and then blame W/D's for all the aches and pains. especially if this has never happened before. just a thought.

Ultram w/d is worse than hydro (IMO).

Definately more profound w/d symptoms.

want2b:

I don't think it's all that weird, outside of your not having experienced this before. How long were you taking the meds before and then taking them now before running out? I have never taken large quantities of hydro, but when I began taking it every day (2 lorcet a day), after about 3 months, well, I had the same withdrawals that most people seem to have taking large quantities, but I will say, not for as long, it seems. Mine lasted about a week total before I felt "normal pain" again. TOTALLY experienced everything you are. I haven't gone back to an OP since. I also told my Doctor that the hydro secretly wants to be taken #wink

Hope you feel better really soon!

Thank you to all. I'm feeling a little better. Still awful but the weirdest thing is that I had run out before & never had any symptoms. Had not taken them for a few months and then started up again and NOW I'm experiencing the W/D's. Sure makes it bad on my family. I've GOT to take care of them. Must soldier on. I did take Excedrin this AM. Only 1 'cause sometimes it makes me feel worse. Tried 1/2 (.5 mg)Xanax. That put me to sleep for an hour. ARRRGH.

If there is any way at all you can get by on NSAID's or non-opioids, then take this as a blessing in disguise to get out while you still can.

With any kind of opiate, in the beginning everyone is able to take it in daily spurts and then stop without any real withdrawal. Then it gradually gets noticeable, maybe loose bowel movements or some anxiety. It may take years for it to develop into full-fledged hellish withdrawal, but it will happen in time.

You made the thread topic "weird withdrawal" - it's not at all weird as someone pointed out, this is what everyone who is dependent on opiates has gone through at some point. In that respect, Ultram isn't different.

I take tramadol.

Tramadol (Ultram) Withdrawl is an intense agony-hell and it is surprising that people think things like: its not an opioid or it doesnt have withdrawl. this is completely untrue.

a few people on this board also have mentioned that for them, tramadol withdrawl is worse than hydrocodone withdrawl

tramadol withdrawl requires taper and care just like its hydrocodone

allthough the information is right infront of their faces, even right there in the precribing info for crying out loud, some people still think or say that tramadol is not an opioid. i do not know why this is.

I've been taking hydro on and off for years. Recently I've been taking more since my pain has gotten worse. I was up to 15-20 mg daily (not a lot compared to many people, but a lot for me). Yesterday I decided not to take any, well about noon time I got vicious stomach pains and a really bad case of the runs. I immediately took 5 mg and felt a little better. After taking another 5 mg, most of the pain went away. I guess it was withdrawal - I'm not happy about that, as I thought I was one of those who could get by without taking it. I plan to get back to my "every few days" schedule as soon as possible.

Don't plan it- do it. You sound just like me back when I used to have that every few days dosing schedule; that stomach pain was my first noticable withdrawal symptom- everyone has one that is especially bad for them. The sweating/temperature weirdness/muscle pain sucks, but I can tough through that- it is the severe stomach pain that has gotten me in the past.

As a little tip, there is a prescription drug Librax (it's a CIV)- it's Librium and Quarzan (an antispasmodic) and that is very good for withdrawal stomach pain. I don't like to take huge amounts of Immodium or Lomotil when w/d'ing as I want to get my bowels as un-opiate-dependent as possible, so I avoid taking enough to make that pain disappear. Librax is a great alternative and has gotten me through some rough times where I'd otherwise be curled up in fetal position. Mixing it with just enough Lomotil to almost-normalize me makes the physical stuff significantly easier. The Librium can take the edge off the mental stuff if you have nothing else around and take enough of it.

It really isn't hard to get from a doctor either, I got prescribed it for "unexplained" stomach pain/diarrhea from a gastroenterologist.

Yawkaw, sounds like you have good Doc's. Luckily, I do not have the stomach problems that much. Just a lot of pooping. Sorry to be gross. No diarrhea or stomach pain. It is the weird temp-hot, then cold, feeling generally like expletive deleted, the mental, etc. The mental isn't even that bad because I figure I NEED to NOT take anything eventually. Here is the really bad part--I am actually a nicer, calmer, happier (on the outside) individual. I'm terribly shy & obsess over everything (part of the reason I don't get to sleep well-take 1 mg. xanax for that). Do not tell me why but the 2 50 mg Ultram helped me not be so weird. Plus I never really thought they did anything other than take away my "bed back" a little bit. No euphoria, etc. I didn't like taking so much Advil. My husband has bad knees and he takes bottles of it a week. I figure THAT can not be good even though Doc's prescribe it. My father-in-law just had his second knee replaced and he also took/takes HUGE amounts of Advil. I was proud of myself because I no longer took copious amounts of Advil (for my lower back-PMS time is especially BAD-that is what Tramadol was prescribed for in the first place. Originally, the Doc gave me Vicodin! Hated that. Then he gave me the Tramadol & it seemed to work at first. I don't know. I'm just a pre-menopausal freak. You can not believe what women my age go through. I think that there should be PMS specialists & that they should be women that have been there.)Oh, I was also tested for RA because of my joint pain. Luckily I don't have that. I'm just old. Turn 47 tomorrow. Ugh. Better than the alternative & I DO have a LOT to be thankful for.
