The following quote was copied from this site's Drug Description.
I am kinda S-L-O-W, so could someone tell me if this is saying that a "high fat meal" leads to more of a Bang? I just don't understand what the "25% greater peak plasma concentration" means or indicates.
Can ya'll explain this to me?
"One OxyContin® 160 mg tablet is comparable to two 80 mg tablets when taken on an empty stomach. With a high fat meal, however, there is a 25% greater peak plasma concentration following one 160 mg tablet. Dietary caution should be taken when patients are initially titrated to 160 mg tablets (see Special Instructions for OxyContin® 80 mg and 160 mg Tablets)."
Oh, btw, this is my FIRST POST! I have been a faithful reader but a little shy! This site ROCKS! And I have read some very intelligent and helpful post here that I really appreciate.
Thanks to everyone running this site and all the folks who are generous with their wisdom.

Hi and welcome!
I think to answer most directly, I think the simple answer is yes.
Probably the reason for the warning on the 160s is because it's a lot of narcotic to release into the bloodstream, but it is my belief that the higher peak plasma concentration is something that occurs when you combine any Oxycodone product with a high fat meal.
I say that because I have felt the difference, and I just take 15mg of Oxycodone at a time. When I take it with a cup of tea and say, breakfast cereal, I don't even feel as if I've taken a narcotic.
But taken with a greasier meal, I have noticed a remarkable difference. I once took my meds just before enjoying a decadent, terribly unhealthy burger-and-fries meal, and I swear twenty minutes later I felt very warm and fuzzy indeed.
If I need a boost in my meds, these days, I'll still sometimes have bacon and eggs for breakfast rather than boring old yogurt!
This is no scientific explanation, it's just the way this drug effects me with a fatty meal.
Hope this was of any use.
Cheers!

As far as peak plasma - I believe the slow release mechanism intends to build up to a certain steady amount of Oxy in your blood. It builds up, then levels off and is kept at that level for the intended duration (they say 12 hours, but it's closer to eight).
So what I think that means is that your initial levels (in the hour or so after eating a high fat meal) of Oxy will be 25 per cent higher due to it breaking down less fast in the presence of fat. This is my (layperson's) take on it.
Gee, I hope I'm right or at least somewhere in the ball park. Any scientists around?

Does this work for most narcotic meds or just oxy? I'm asking because I don't seem to feel any difference whether I eat fatty or healthy, and I just take hydro..?
Just wondering. This, indeed, will not make me want to start eating unhealthy by any means...I was just curious.

It's a little-known fact that oxycodone affects women differently than men. Studies have shown that females achieve up to 25% more peak plasma concentrations than men do.
I will attempt to locate the studies I was just reading the other day and provide links.
