I was wondering if it is possible to take too much NAC. The bottle says 1 per day, but that article that was posted not too long ago said to take it with every dose of tylenol. Does anyone know?

Hey There;

I just wanted say I have had experiences with this feeling (the shocking feeling or jolting) coming off Paxil for approx. 3 months, and also when I have come off opiates.

Just my 2

Oh, and for the person who asked about what Benzo's were, they are the common meds like Valium, Klonlpin and Xanax, along with may others. They are controlled drugs though.

Hi, I read your post regarding your addiction concerns. It broke my heart that you are living with terrible pain and are simultaneously torturing yourself with addiction fears. I don't know you but after reading your post at first blush you do NOT sound like an addict. Your body becomes accustomed to the presence of opiates and when you abruptly discontinue them it is NORMAL (I don't know of a person who hasn't) to feel the effects of withdrawl. Your opiate receptors are wide open and screaming to be 'filled' so to speak. These feelings in NO WAY mean that you are an addict. What you are is dependent. Physical dependence has nothing to do with addiction other than the fact that an addict will also be physically dependent. That is the ONLY connection. Addiction is a complex situation and the primary problem/issue is psychological in nature. As long as you can answer 'No' to the following questions (to yourself of course) then you are not an addict:
1. Do I habitually run out of my medication early? (This can be a tough one because often pain is woefully under-treated)
2. Do I miss/desire the 'rush' I feel when my medication becomes effective?
3. Do I lie to continue to receive medication?
4. Do I take more than is indicated just for the feeling?
5. Do my family/friends express concern about my 'problem'?
6. Does a large part of my life revolve around the procurement of medication?
7. Do I conceal my use from friends/family?
8. Do I doctor shop?
9. Do I use several pharmacies?
10. Have I ever stolen (out of your friends medicine cabinet for instance) drugs or the money to get them?
11. Are my personal relationships suffering because of my use? (NOT because of your pain, most relationships do suffer somewhat in the face of a chronic pain issue)
12. Am I becoming a person that I don't know/like?
13. Am I doing things that I would normally never do or approve of in my quest for medication? (compromising your principles is cardinal and very hard to own up to)
These are a few common questions. If you answer no to them then you are just fine. Dependence is easily managed by a rational weaning process when opiate therapy is no longer indicated. So PLEASE don't torture youself unnecessarily. Protracted pain is hard enough to deal with on its own. Don't further burden yourself with addiction fears. Remember that dependence does not indicate addiction. Dependence is a normal and expected consequence of opiate use. You are not a junkie! Peace, Daisy

I should point out my feelings on why your family doesn't know about your problem and why no one knew the real reson you were in the ER. My gut instinct told me that your family doesn't know about your 'problem' because yours is physical in nature and you are not displaying the characterisitcs of an addict. So the reason they are not seeing a problem is because there isn't one to see in regard to addiction. Many withdrawl patients present as a dehydrated flu patient. It takes the savvy and attentive doctor to see the real reason for your suffering. Most ER doctors are so hassled and harried that they don't pick up on such subtle nuances. They are there to treat you accutely as in reduce fever, rehydrate and stabilize you. When that is accomplished you are sent on your way with instructions to follow up with your primary. ER doctors do not treat patients chronically. Because of that the true nature of your difficulty that day may have been lost on him/her. I suspect that you concealed your true problem out of embarassment because you were operating under the assumption that you are an addict.

Hi Brit (Thornberry)

I too am trying to taper off Paxil because the side affects are NOT agreeing with me. I too have had those "shocking" things in my head.
Would you mind helping me out with how you did your taper?.

BABYBLUEYES

It was over ten years ago that I stopped taking Paxil and I still remember it well because it was really hard. I did exactly what you are doing - I actually was able to pretty quickly cut the pills into halves and then quarters. Are your pills time released in any way? There wasn't such a thing back when I took then. If they are time release obviously you cannot cut them up. I spent about a week on a dose - say taking one everyother night and then would decrease by HALF the next week. So the the following week I would take 1/2 a pill for 7 days. When I got down to 1/4 pill I had to take that stupid 1/4 pill for a long time! I would start taking it every three days and then just when I felt the synptoms coming on - but I took it maybe one a week for months. It took a long time to be able to cut the drug completely out of my system. I know 1/4 pill for a week sounds crazy - but that's what it took!

I'd be happy to talk to you further about it. I know it stinks. You can PM me if you'd like!

Hi All, I didn't read back through the whole thread............... But the electric shock sensation and visual disturbances that many of you describe are classic signs of Benzo withdrawl. Now don't start yelling! I am not implying that anyone in this thread is in Benzo withdrawl or even takes them. How would I even know that? So having said that I will make a comment on Benzo withdrawl. It can be deadly dangerous. It is not like opiate withdrawl where you merely think (or wish as the case may be) you are going to die. Benzo withdrawl can cause VERY serious heart beat irregularities, including but not limited to fibrillation. It can also send your seizure risk through the roof. Anyone in Benzo withdrawl is highly encouraged to seek immediate medical attention. While rare, it CAN kill you. It can also cause signifigant neural damage (not as rare) that can result in problems that you may end up suffering with for the rest of your life. I am certain that many of you already knew all of this. This post was for anyone who doesn't. Don't suffer in silence. Go to the ER, tell the truth and get the help (no not rehab, physical intervention) that you need. Peace, Daisy

Well, I am not on Benzo at all. Actually, I am liking the thereory about the *exploding head* syndrome. That truly sounds like what I have.

Nothing more fun than electric shock treatment.......hehehe........ !!!! Just kidding!!!!

I've had the loud noise right after failling asleep before but I thought that I had dreampt that I was shot in the head. lol

Has anyone ever felt like their heart was fluttering irregularly? I get that all the time, especially when I am just lying down to go to sleep but I think that is because at other times I don't notice it.

Yes I get heart palpitations all the time. For the most part, they are harmless, but if they continue for a while, you may want to get them checked out. I still get them every day and especially right when I lay down. There are all sorts of different heart fibrillation, some dangerous and some benign. Anyway, good luck..

Ohh and to the poster that asked about taking too much NAC? Yeah I think it is possible to take too much, because I was taking up to 1800mg a day.. 3 pills.

That seemed to work for a while, but then strange side effects started to happen and I discontinued.

Tred =)

I had those heart fluters but turned out they were panick attacks, then I was on Paxil for a year and it didn't help. Than the withdrawl from the Paxil was just like everybody else here said, same symtoms. I take Lexapro now, 20mg, and i feel alot better, no side effects, no complications or panick.
Other drugs i've taken that didn't work.
Prozac
Effexor
Serequel
Wellbutrin XL

Effeczor is very expensive, even with insurance a months supply is $40. Ouch, but it's good stuff.

Dyna,
I have too. But not like a jolt of lightning, more like a strobe light when I'm laying down, resting or even moving around.
It feels so strange and I thought it had something to do with muscle spasms (I suffer from back & neck pain - migraines, chronic stuff), but it seems so much more severe. When I finally decided to tell my dr. about it, he told me not to worry about it. "Yeah, okay - if it was happening to him he'd be worried about it I'm sure"
so maybe try logging the time they happen and what you were doing at that time. If you have something written down to take to your dr. he/she might pay more attention.

Good luck.

That sounds like the right track BabyBlueEyes.

I found that a VERY small amount was able to keep that crazy and annoying feeling away. You can experiment a little to find you minimun. Maybe push it one more day at some point...maybe you could get someone to call in a bottle of 10mg immediate release also? Just a thought!

You'll do fine!!

Brit

I get the same thing too from percocet. Although, since I am in the process of a very slow taper to be off of them, it has not been as bad. When I ws taking 40-50mg a day, I felt it when I was firslt falling asleep. It has gotten a lot better since I am down to 25mg.
