There was a story on NPR's All Things Considered program this Thursday afternoon about "how easy it is to get prescription drugs" on the internet, with the usual interviews with the DEA and anti-drug people. Here is the summary from their website:
Drug Scams Abound on the Internet
from All Things Considered, Thursday , April 22, 2004
The illegal sale of narcotics and other prescription drugs over the Internet is a growing problem that federal officials are struggling to cope with, according to law enforcement officials. Traffic is rapidly increasing, and there are many cases of fraud and dangerous fluctuations in potency. NPR's Patricia Neighmond reports.
Of course, they all say how easy it is to get OxyContin and other CII narcotics online, and how awful all this is. I was really disappointed by NPR, they do tend to be a bit more thorough in their reporting than the major networks and CNN. It seems that they too have surrendered journalism for hype. Here is a link to the audio clip:

That is really disappointing! I have always counted on NPR to be a voice of reason, especially lately.
I missed that on the radio, so thanks for posting.

I started to listen to it and just turned it off.....all this bad press only makes me anxious and angry. HOW can they report that you can obtain Oxy online?!?!? We know that it is impossible to do unless you go through an illegal source, right? It always amazes me how they forget to differenciate the legit OP's that actually help CP'ers from the scum who sell meds via email or otherwise.
Maybe I am ignorant- listening to these one sided reports just ruin my day. I too am disappointed with NPR, as they usually are more open-minded in their coverage. Good link though- information is always important to have.

with the pie being more and more controlled by a special few, NPR's are having to court the owners to get a tiny slice.

Fred,
Thank you for including this disappointing story and link.
I often listen to them and am surprised they would air such a one-sided program.
Their programming is often on controversial subjects, but carried out by having representatives from both sides. This creates the balance and reason that Potato mentioned.

That is exactly what really disappointed me. I have been so used to NPR at least trying to cover both sides of the story, but this was completely one sided. I wonder if it is related to them getting rid of Bob Edwards, who has been a voice of reason for them for many years.
Needless to say, I won't trust NPR to give me a balanced story anymore. I will listen to the BBC more often now, though I can't get it in my car. Maybe I should bring my shortwave radio with me on my morning commute...

Fred

Hi -
I, too, am disappointed in NPR's one-sided coverage (just read the thread now)... And caramello you're absolutely right - with media conglomerates getting bigger and bigger and controlling more and more of the media I'm afraid that we are in grave danger of ultimately losing most of the unbiased coverage of news subjects! (I don't know if any of you saw it but there was an excellent program on Bill Moyer's NOW program awhile back which addressed this problem. I think it was called The Danger of Media Conglomeration on Democracy or something like that.) I know this is a little off the original topic but am glad to know others have similar concerns!
By the way, did any of you call or e-mail NPR and give them any feedback about the program?

Tortie, you bring up a very valid point. I went to the link and listened in horror myself. I too, used to rely on NPR for point/counterpoint reporting, but it seems that they missed the target on this topic.
As much as it may not be worth sending them an email about my descent, I am going to take the time to do it. We all have to be the voice of reason if all others will not. We owe it to ourselves and each other to stand up and be heard on this issue!
