I might have to take a drug test in the near future and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the testers can tell the difference in opiates? Like between codeine, hydro, or perks. Or does the test just show all of them as an opiate?

There are 5-panel tests and 10-panel tests, among others. Depending what you are having the test for, and if it's for a pain clinic, I can assure you that they will test for individual narcotics, and not just narcotics as a whole.
Bottom line to your question is that if the test is for employment, etc., then they would just probably test for "narcotics" as a whole.
If it's a test for a Pain Clinic, the test would absolutely show what "type" of opiates are in your system. I also understand that although "get clean" kits are available all over the net, none of them work. To "get clean" you must stay drug free, period.
This is JMO and what I have researched on this issue.

It is my understanding that if you test positive for opiates, they can & sometimes do run another test which does indeed test for which specific opiate is in your system. I highly doubt that if you're testing for employment they will run the 2nd test, as it is quite expensive. However, if you are being tested for legal matters, (drug court, criminal court, etc.) they just might want to know specifics.
You may want to consider stopping your meds 48-72 hours prior to the test, unless of course, you have a legit Rx, then you are safe-just bring the bottle with you, as you will test "false positive".
Best of luck!
Peace,

If you know for sure when a test will take place stop 48 to 72 hours ahead and if you need something for pain in between take soma.It wont show on any test.I WAS DRUG TESTED while on soma and it was never picked up.Of course its not a narcotic.Just a thought if you get in a pinch

How sure is everyone that somas do not show up on tests? Is it not a substance that is tested for, in general? Thanks.

3 months back...I just took a pre-employment physical for a company that also included a drug test. It came back positive for opiates.
They called me and I had to provide them with the pharmacy phone number and the meds that I was on and the drs phone number.
I told the technician that I was going to test positive due to a cold that I had and that the dr gave me cough syrup with cod in it, which I took 6 hrs before the test. I'm still employed by that company that tested me, and they do random drug testing....which I've passed
I've taken hydro in the past and took a drug test due to D.O.T standards and passed.
If it is prescribed by a dr, you'll be ok.
If you read some of the posts in the past, people will put that if you drink water and take a high potency B vitamin that you be able to test neg...
One thing that I do know that is true, DO NOT GO AND TAKE A DRUG TEST FIRST THING IN THE MORNING! Go empty out...drink some water then go and take the test you have less "chemicals of the night before" in your system.
It all depends on the drugs half life and how fast your body metabolizes it. If your a chronic user then it will take a longer time.
Good luck and hope you pass.
