Duragesic patch has eratic delivery system of med. new
      #156459 - 04/21/04 12:43 AM

I have been on the duragesic patch for about 2 months. Sometimes they work and sometimes no or very little medication flows out of the patch. How do I know about the medication flow? Because the patch will only stay on the spot that I have layed it for about 24 hours. And these areas are areas that get the least flexing and are the least boney areas of my body. If I threw that patch away as directed in the instructions when it comes off, I would be out of patches in a few days. So I use medical waterproof tape when the patch starts to crinkle. I even showed my doctor the taped patch. He is like the Spink-he never comments. I have given up asking for Oxy since I have asked directly about 5 times since last summer.

I have a friend on another board and 12 members of his board have used the patch and none liked it because it either left a rash (it did on me too) or it didn't work.

I have read that the patch is a new way doctors prescribe pain medication and can keep up better with it.

This class 2 medication should go back to the drawing board.

Maybe the pain doctor he has mentioned sending me too will do better than this primary care doc. Good luck finding one. I just checked and there are only six in the nearest city to me in Texas with about 3 million people that take my major line Blue Cross insurance. And half of these doctors probably not still be taking my insurance.

I didn't mention about the patch's erratic delevery system in the first post. When they work, they work good but not great like I thought a class 2 medication would work.

Some patches do work for 3 days as advertised. But a lot of them work about one day-maybe two days at best. The 'dud' patches might work better if you made slits in the membrane to get the medicine flowing, but that is not responsible.

So some work as directed and some don't really work.

I wanted to clear up my first post.

I was on the patch for seven months, and titrated from 25mcg to 50 mcg, but for some reason could not titrade further up, with out some nasty side effects.
The patch had "power surges" where I could def feel when the patch was working and other times I wondered if it was even on!! I had lots of issues with adhering to my skin as well. I used the bioclusive covering that Janssen makes, but found that I had a more severe skin irritation. I hated it!! I didn't like the pain control, and I didn't like having 24 hour pain dripping into my system. I didn't need as much when I was sleeping. But that was me. I also noticed some mental/emotional changes that were not me. I decided in January to quit. I went from 50mcg to nothing. It took approximately a full three weeks to feel "normal", but I had oxycodone to help over the withdrawal from the fentanyl. I am on oxy now, and have no problems with this, and glad I left the patch behind.
Just my own experience....PM if you want more info,
take care

I have these power surges and as I stated, rashes from the adhesive shich I showed both the doctor and pharmacist where I got the patch. I wish I could get on oxy. Everyone that knows my condition and pain medication say that I need oxy and not this garbage.

Another consideration is what if a cop stops you and see the patch. DUI time maybe.

The medication may be strong but frankly I can't feel it over lortab 10 except for these 'power surges' and its not much stronger. Plus in this state, I can get up to 5 refills on the lortab. Its a monthly out of town visit for a perscription of the patch..

I hate this thing. Maybe that the patch is unpopular is the reason I have trouble finding it in a three block radius and 5 major chain drugstores did not even keep it on my first refil.

I am considering withdrawl from this whole pain probititon despite a recent MRI stated that I have my 2 lower disks protuding into my left sciatic nerve and begining to bulge into my right sciatic never.

Or maybe I will move to a more enlightend country.

And if you have actually tried the patch, it feels horible on your skin and I have to keep moving it around. If this is the best I can get, its time to find a new doctor.

On second though, I have never met a docto that wasn't some prima donna Best if kept off the board-head.
