Hi Mermaid:
Well, I've spoken to a doctor about this. Hydro gets me a bit wired. Not speedy but awake! That's why I like it cause I can get through my day with energy and without pain. But it mostly affects patients the opposite away and they get groggy on it. I recommend that you tell your doctor what's going on and maybe he/she can give you something to sleep.

Insomnia is a well-documented side effect of all opiates. Some are more sensitive to it than others. But if you are w/d'ing, you aren't likely to get much sleep. Also, if you are very dependent, and your last dose was at say 8, and you went to sleep at 11, it's possible you'd wake up in pain at 3:30 and need to redose.

I have the same problem with any narcotics. I'm currently taking Percocet, but won't take it during the work week because, a) I can't function clearly on it at work and b) if I take it after I get home, I won't sleep at all that night and won't be able to function the next day at work I also spoke to my doctor about it and he advised me that, most people have the opposite reaction, as one of the prior poster's mentioned. However, a rare number of patients will have the effect we have- that it keeps us up at night. As my doc. said, I just happen to be one of those people- sounds like you are too. I will tell you that I have insomnia on occasion that is not related to the meds, but the pharmacist has assured me that as long as I took the narcotics several hours prior to taking the sleeping pill, it wouldn't hurt. HOWEVER, please don't think this goes for all pain meds/sleeping aides. This just happens to be my particular combination. I never take any new drug without first making the pharmacist read through all the drugs I'm currently taking and assuring me there is no harm in mixing them, so to speak- or, I should say- in taking more than one of them on the same day should I need it.
Hope this helps.

Hydro has a weird effect on me at night. It doesn't keep me "awake" per se... but it puts me in this weird state where I feel like I'm dreaming and not getting REM sleep. I mean, I know that I "sleep"... but it's not restful sleep. And naturally the next day I'm tired, but I have to take the hydro at night or else I won't sleep at all because of joint pain. It's bad enough that I sleep on my right side, but my RA has been affecting my right shoulder really bad lately... so... I guess I have to choose between the lesser of two evils. The tiredness I feel the next day isn't really enough to incapacitate me...so I do what I have to. And when I really hurt during the day, I cut my hydro in half... doesn't kill the pain, but it makes it possible to function. I've got a 6 month old... sooooo.... I know that rough days are ahead, I would just rather not think about it. LOL
But just wanted to add my experience to the thread. I know how you sleepless/restless board members feel.

Hydro similarly affects me with the inability to fall asleep and the quality of my sleep is poor. When I have had it (usually for dental pain or in a cough syrup formulary) it has made me even more of an insomniac than I already am. Mostly because it makes my head "run" and my thoughts roll continuously, preventing me from falling asleep. Thankfully, it is not my primary pain med or I don't know what I would do!
You aren't the only one for sure, but hydro is the only opioid which causes this reaction for me.

Opioids keep you awake because of their main mechanism, the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens. so much for the term "narcotic". what a misnomer.
I consider opioids to be anxiety free stimulants. i wouldnt call opioids downers at all, they seem to be more stimulating than a downer. but opioids do have inhibiting effects as well as exicitory on neurons, and the mechanism of causing the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens is what causes the pain relief, the mental side effects, and keeping you awake.
you cant sleep during withdrawl because your lacking the dopamine stimulation plus the inhibitory effects of opioids are gone, clonidine will replace those inhibitory effects of opioids but doesnt replace the dopamine stimulation in the pleasure pathways you got from it. thats why clonidine the BP drug is specifically used with opioid withdrawl, it has some of the same inhibitory effects as opioids on certain brain areas including the brain stem.
this may seem contradictory but if you have just enough reward pathway dopamine stimulation it will actually help sleep and if you have too much youll be awake, and if you lack it youll be craving it while trying to sleep

Hydro keeps me awake too! I don't know a single thing about chemicals and how they affect you but for some reason if I take a hydro I won't be able to sleep.
On the other hand, when I take stimulants (mainly ritalin)they make me extremely sleepy and slow. I wonder why is that?

Hi Mermaid,
Hydro also gets me wired! I have a reverse effect with a lot of medications...I usually try to take a xanax before bed, sometimes it help, other time I get more wired...go figure!
Also someone posted this, QUOTE: but it puts me in this weird state where I feel like I'm dreaming and not getting REM sleep QUOTE:
I also feel like this when I do sleep...I feel like my eyes are closed and I am dreaming, but not really asleep (make sense?)...I know what you are talking about...Anglwink

Were you ever diagnosed with ADD/ADHD? that would explain why the ritalin slows you down. Thats what is does for ADD/ADHD sufferers, it has the REVERSE effect on them, thus slowing them down, instead of makeing them speedy. Anglwink

As Briar said, I'm the same way about not feeling like I get REM sleep. I'll wake up feeling as if I didn't rest at all. I'll take 1 1/2 hydro at night to ease the pain enough to rest.
I also am going through premenopause so that doesnt help.
My dr is getting ready to put me on humira? (I think that's what it's called) for my RA.
I'm so tired of the pain.

my experience EXACTLY with hydro at night. weird "dream-ish" non sleep. sometimes very scary realistic nightmares.
i hate it.

I have the same effect from it, almost speedy feeling, then when I do get to sleep I constantly wake up because Im either having swooping falling dreams or just plain weird and senseless nightmares. So I dont like to take it when I get it prescribed towards evenings because Im a chronic insomniac with the racing mind syndrome anyway. Luckily I havent needed it in quite some time
