Codeine side effects
      #155672 - 04/16/04 01:17 PM

Can anyone fill me in on what the side effects of codeine are? I have a friend who has developed a rash on her hands after taking Codeine and I'm wondering if it has to do with the med.

Can anyone help?

~~Briar

Codeine side effects include
skin rash, hives, itching, these are frequent and may be dose related. Try cutting the dose in half and add more as the rash gets better. Most people experience itching
with opioids and this most always goes away if the rash continues to get worse discontinue use.

Being a person who is allergic to codeine, I can relate my allergic crisis:

Within 1 hour of taking my FIRST tablet of Tylenol 3 I started itching persistently. Within 2 hours, I had a rash which covered my entire body and the itching was so severe that I literally covered my hands in socks to keep from ripping my skin into shreds (I have always had long, real nails.)

I called the doctor when my reaction started giving me a suffocating feeling. I had to go to the ER for an injection to stave off the allergic reaction.

Granted this is probably not the TYPICAL allergic reaction, but intense itching IS. A small, localized rash may or may not be an allergic reaction. Best thing to do is not take the med if there is ANY question of allergy before a doctor can be consulted.
