Calling all you drug experts...
      #155523 - 04/15/04 09:06 PM

I know you are out there, I'm just not sure you will find little ole me way down here! Getting used to the new posting system.

Anyway, my question is in regards to a recent switch on my prescription. I had a prescription for Zanaflex, and my most recent refill came with a different med, Baclofen. I have read a few articles on this new drug and I have heard about some withdrawl nightmares with this drug. I was told by my insurance (and its a ligit company, one of the most well known) that Baclofen was now going to replace my Zanaflex b/c they are comparible or something. But I know that my zanaflex didnt have any warning on withdrawl symptoms. Does anyone know anything about this drug and why it would be in place of the Zanaflex? Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

According to "The Pill Book" (10th edition):

Baclofen is a skeletal muscle relaxant, which works by interfering with nervous system reflexes at the spinal cord. It is chemically similar to GABA, a neurotransmitter.

As for the "nightmare withdrawls" you have heard about, the book warns that stopping baclofen abruptly can lead to hallucinations and seizure.

Hope this helps a little!

Thanks! That does help. But is this equivalent to the Zanaflex? I mean, how can the insurance company switch me from something that doesnt cause withdrawl to something that does, especially when its something I have to take every night? well, i guess i CAN see how an insurance company could do that, b/c we all know how great they are. Im just a little worried...

Another poster a few months ago specifically mentioned Baclofen and how it has helped her. HERE IS THE THREAD.
