I've seen umpteen million (OK, a slight exaggeration) posts on comparing different forms of hydro, and I have tried many different forms of methadone (liquid, concentrate, diskettes {i.e. dispersible tablets} and tablets.)
For those of you out there who have experience with this medication, I'm interested in your experience with the different manufacturers and formularies available.
I currently use the Methadose 10mg tablets made by Mallinckrodt.
I was just switched from the same manufacturer's 5mg tablets and have previously used their 40mg dispersible tablets.
I have also used the Roxane Labs' 5 and 10mg tablets, the Intensol (concentrated oral solution 10mgs/ml--no alcohol) and their oral liquid 5mg/5ml--which has alcohol.
The only kind of methadone offered by these manufacturers that I have NOT tried is the methadone powder.
In my experience, the best of the whole lot are the Mallinckrodt 10mg tablets. I get more relief from 1 10mg tablet than I do from 2 5mg tablets made by the same manufacturer.
One thing I have found about methadone is that ALL the different formularies seem very similar in the amount of time it takes to start working...about 1 hour. But I did find the diskettes did not seem to last as long as the tablets and liquid did. The 5mg/5ml liquid did not last as long as the 10mg/ml liquid, nor as long as any of the tablets (except the diskettes.)
Another observation is that the Mallinckrodt "Methadose" tablets are substantially larger in size than their Roxane counterparts of the same dosage. I wonder why that is?
Again, I would appreciate anyone's experience on this subject.

Hi Night_shade,
I'm not the smartest person when it comes to medicine, but I have had methadone prescribed twice back in Sept., Oct., when I went to a pain management clinic for my back.
I am probably not answering anything here but wanted to let you know that I've had this med. I received the methadose generic form. I can't remember if they were 5 or 10mg though. I mean, when I got them I had NO idea what they were because I was generally looking to get plain Vic's...which the Dr. didn't prescribe because to her it was "short-term" instead of "long-term" relief which is what meth is for. What scared me was when I did a research on this med it was basically prescribed for heroin addicts, and I have NEVER EVER in my life done that...too chicken of needles.
Anyway my experience was this...
I took one tablet, waited a long time and really don't recall feeling anything. So, I took 1 and 1/2 and waited for awhile and remember feeling a little, but not sure what the feeling was. Anyway, the next day, after thinking how disappointed I was and why this Dr. would give me something that wasn't a pain reliever (so I thought), I took 2 tablets, and after a while I was flying everywhere!!! I felt like I had taken 7 or more Vic's (I was a beginner back then)and I ended up calling off work because there was no way I was going to be flying around the department I worked in!!! I would have looked like an idiot! When I was talking to personnel at work I was rambling so much and couldn't shut up!!!!
Well, in the long run, they did relieve my pain...for many hours...and I ended up liking them even though I only got 2 prescriptions worth. Eventually what I ended up doing was like taking 1 tab of methadose with 1-2 Vic's and it seemed to work even better.
I'm sure this isn't exactly what you were looking for in responses but I just wanted to share.
Thanks.

Your question is why the mally tablet is bigger if I understand it correctly. I don't know EXACTLY why in a technical sense as I'm not a chemist, but I can say with a high degree of certainty that it's due to whatever filler they use to put the drug into tablet form.
Hope this helps!
Happy Easter!!!!

Fred:
My question was not why is the tablet bigger, but rather why do you think that ONE 10mg tablet seems more effective for my pain than TWO of the 5mg tablets...
Hope that clarifies it.

I think this may be the question Fred S was referring to. Believe it or not, any drugs that might be abused and can be injected are sometimes formulated in ways that will deter crushing and injecting them, and making them huge is one way of doing that.
As for why a single 10 mg might seem more effective than two 5's, differences in the formulation, even the inactive ingredients, can affect absorption and drug availability in the bloodstream, and that could be what is going on, since the 10's and 5's could actually have different formulas.

I appreciate all responses to my post. Thanks for the quote, I guess I had made so many different points in my original post that I hadn't thought about that particular question (which was an out-loud wondering) and fred's response now makes much more sense to me. Guess that's what I get for skimming my own post the 2nd time around!
I've been a little scatterbrained lately with a major medical issue taking precedence over everything. My apologies in advance, everyone.
