hearing/ear problems
      #154150 - 04/10/04 11:52 AM

Anyone ever experience hearing/ear problems? My hearing suffers when I use hydro and the area around my ear actually is tender/sensitive - almost to the point of being painful. Anyone else with this phenomenon? Thanks.

I have read somewhere else that hearing loss is a side effect of opiates. I never experienced this when I was taking hydro, but I bet there are others on this board who have. If I remember correctly, Rush Limbaugh had some hearing loss because of his extensive use of oxycontin.

I've read something to that effect as well & it seems it's happening to me and I don't like it.

It actually makes my left ear and surrounding tissue sensitive and almost painful to the touch and feels similar to an ear infection. Oh well, life sometimes isn't fun.

I don't want to freak you out, but this can be very serious stuff -- hydro/apap has been linked to total, permanent hearing loss. From what I've read, it is only with extremely high doses, like 200 mgs of hydro a day or more, but I don't know the whole story. After several years of taking more and more and more hydro, I started getting really bad tinnitus, ringing and buzzing noises in my ears, and pain in my inner ear, which I finally linked to dosing with hydro -- at first I didn't make the connection. It was when I remembered about Rush L. going deaf (he now has cochlear implant) that I checked into it. It scared the Best if kept off the board out of me, I quit hydro and now take methadone which does not have this effect. Here's a link on the subject -- there isn't a whole lot of information available on this. The LA Times article is the most complete, but you have to sign up on their website so I didn't post the link because it doesn't work unless you join. Good luck -- if you aren't having tinnitus, your symptoms may not be related, I think that is the primary sign that you're experiencing this problem.

Here is a more technical explanation from another article.

"Tissues particularly susceptible to damage in mitochondrial disorders are those that are postmitotic and highly metabolically active. These include brain, muscle, retina, and, in the inner ear, hair cells. It is tempting to speculate that a genetic mutation may give rise to selective vulnerability in hydrocodone-induced ototoxicity. Because Vicodin and its congeners are so widely used and because of the profound functional significance of rapidly progressive hearing loss, physicians prescribing hydrocodone and hydrocodone-containing compounds must be aware of the possible association with severe cochlear toxicity."

Thanks for the info, TR6. Sadly, this is what is happening to me. I initially thought this was an isolated occurance but this is the second time hydro usage and this hearing loss and sensitivity has happened to me, so it's not exclusive events.

If there's any bright side to this, much of what I hear is negative in the world today - although I'll miss listening to music if this continues to get any worse.
