I've used Provigil and it is OK. It helps some, but I can take 2-200mgs and go right back to bed. So sometimes it helps get me going and sometimes it doesn't. But believe me it's not worth the price they sell it for. My Ins. won't cover it because its off-label use, and a months worth would cost me $488!! Way to expensive for me. So I only get it when the Dr. has samples.

That's pretty much my take on it also. The first modafinil (generic name) was offered by IOP's under the brand name Modiodal, and it was sold by a couple of them in a 100mg form, #30 tabs for almost $200 or more, not even including shipping. This had preactically no noticable effect on me.

But I kept reading the reports that continued to come out making extravagent claims for this med, calling it the Wonder Drug for narcolepsy. And there were stories claiming that modafinil was already in wide use in the military as an alertness aid for pilots on long shifts in the cockpit, describing it's properties as preferable to the dexedrine commonly used by military pilots to stay alert and awake.

So when Healthylifemeds and a couple of others added a 200mg version to their product list, #30 for $120, I gave it another shot. There is no question that two tabs will usually perk me up, and helps me stay focused in daytime situations where I used to drift off towards sleep. But then there are times when it seems to be having no effect at all.

I wonder what effect other meds, hydrocodone for instance, could have on the effectiveness of Provigil? Unfortunately, for me anyway, Modafinil/Provigil is too subtle for me to totally endorse the claims being made for it.

Jamming4U, when you were spending $488 a month, was that the pharmacy price or IOP? I suppse if you needed four tabs a day, that would be almost exactly the price at healthylifemeds (#30 @ $120 x 4 per day = $480. That's a stiff price to pay in order not to fall asleep face down in the soup bowl. (Yes I did that once, but I was alone at home).

PB, I think we both get about the same effect with this med. I do take hydro. so I thought that was why it didn't work as well. I took 2- 200mg tabs a day. sorry if I said 4. The $488 was at my local pharm. I did recently order some from HLM but have not rec. them yet. I think the drug mfg. is greatly overexagerating them. But Kent, if you can get sample from Dr. or Ins cover I'd give them a try. I have heard they work for some people really well. Who knows you might be one of them.Tammy

the best price i have found was through Canadian websites, the ones brave enough to export it to Americans. They have it for about $65 for 30 -100mg. European sites have it at the average price which is $160 for 30-100mg. You can pay that much at your local CVS or Eckerd. Of course getting it without the script is why some look online for this. Alertec [the Canadian brand name] tends to be the same price. Modiodal tends to be the same.

Like any stimulant, the body becomes tolerant to the side effects and the dose needed for theraputic value increases.

I suggest trying to get Cephalon to help because they have a reimbursement assistance program to mediate claim requests or prior auth requests between patient and doctor against the insurance company. This however means you havve to release your medical records to Cephalon for helping you and their own research, so they are eager to try for you.

I was skeptical of having my records floating around in space because once you let them out to a company, they do not have any obligation to keep it confidential like a doctor or a therapist. They state this to you, so you might as well just kiss your security good bye. Consider your medical history a public record.

Adrafinil is typically $22-$25 for 40 tabs of 300mg. It breaks down to modafinil and some other metabolites. Both adrafinil [olmifon] and modafinil
were developed by LaFon Labs who are now with Cephalon. Olmifon is distributed in Europe only I think and primarily in France.

My PM doc has suggested this med for me because I stubbornly refuse to allow an increase in my methadone dose because I cannot tolerate the "nods" and I like my clarity of mind that I DIDN'T have at higher doses.

I had never before heard of this drug and I assumed it was an amphetamine-containing product. I have hypertension. I take a strong narcotic. Wouldn't this be effectively like doing a medical speedball? How would my high blood pressure factor in?

Any help would be appreciated.

consider it amphetamine lite. don't do it if you are looking for the euphoric part of it. It exists, but like wellbutrin, it is for like day to a week and that is it. Think of it as super-coffee designed to keep you productively busy if you are non-narcoleptic.
