Pain above and beyond
      #153224 - 04/06/04 01:14 AM

I think no one can help me, but I figured, what the hell, who knows?

I already have Oxy 15 mg tid for pain in my back, which I supplement with Ibup and APAP.

Now I have some sort of extremely painful condition whereby my gums hurt SO badly. As you may guess, it's like the pain point starts from a medicated state, meaning my Oxy dose is a sort of baseline and my extra pain is just excruciating, and doesn't care that I am somewhat medicated.

Had one MSIR left from last year, it was the ONLY thing that was strong enough to help. But that was some stroke of luck after turning old boxes and cabinets upside down. And asking for that kind of relief, I may as well ask for heroin and ride on Air Force One.

This is not a normal tooth ache, I've dealt with those, as well as pulled teeth, which hurts less.

So what can I do? This is really excruciating.

I am doing the obvious - going to the dentist - tomorrow. But I am bound by a contract with my current pain doctor not to accept pain pills from another doctor. And even if I could get them to waive that for this one instance, how would a couple of Vicodins (all my dentist ever prescribes?) even do anything.

Of course I realise that pain meds are not the only way to go (or so I am continually told by compassionate souls that treat me), and I hope they will find a cause, really! I am not doing this for more pain meds, I want them to fix the problem. But in the meantime, what the heck can the dentist do if I can't deal with it much longer? Give me something stronger (yeah THAT'll happen).

I'm up to 3500 mg APAP and all the IBU is giving me an ulcer. Can't concentrate on 'feeling positive'. BTW I ordered the N-Ac for Aceta-poisoning.

So what do most pain patients do when they have a contract and they encounter unexpected acute pain?

Oh well, I don't think anyone can help on this one, but it sure helps to vent.
Think I'll go rinse with salt again...and bang my head against a wall (j/k)

Thanks,
Red

It sounds like you may have a gum infection-not a tooth infection. I have had a gum infection, and it IS extremely painful But the GOOD news is,some anti-biotics will clear it right up,as well as the pain.
I hope you feel better soon.

Yes, hopefully the dentist will be able to treat whatever it is that is causing your pain and get rid of it. I hope that you feel better soon.

If you are taking a lot of Ibuprophen, that could also cause pain and bleeding in the gums.

Do check with your dentist about that.

dentist can proscribe stronger pain med. they are afraid of the DEA. I had an extremly bad abcess that hurt so bad i almost pulled the tooth out myself. the dentist saw how bad i was and gave me 20 mg oxycontin. i had to get a lecture first about it(hype) but it did help the pain

you should call your PMD they could help maybe even call the dentist and get u some relief..

Sounds like you have Trigeminal Neuralgia. Not a toothache but an aggravated nerve in the side of your head that can simulate the symptons of a toothache, earache, etc. and be mind-numbingly painful. My father thought he had a toothache and it turned out to be Trigeminal Neuralgia (TM) and the pain was so bad he was contemplating suicide. Fortunately, he found a doctor who diagnosed the problem and understood the only remedy is extremely strong pain relievers, in this case dilaudid, and he stayed pretty loaded for about three days. After the pain subsides the TM generally stays in abeyance and flares up periodically. Hopefully, anyone afflicted with this problem has a sympathetic and courageous doctor or one might find oneself contemplating eating the barrel of a .357.

there are several local anaesthetics that can be used to numb gums including lidocaine, novacaine, benzocaine, cocaine, etc. i believe there are some over the counter for toothaches

Nobody has suggested yet that it might be the same kind of pain I experience in my gums/teeth from TMJ.

The pain I have is EXCRUCIATING and comes on like a freight train. Seeing as I take methadone 3 times daily and this pain is so far beyond the pain-relieving qualities of my med, I am loathe to believe ANY narcotic would help short of doses so high I am out of commission.

I should also say that this gum/tooth pain goes away as suddenly as it comes on. No dentist will touch it because it is NOT tooth-related, there is no abcess, no clinical dental problem. It is directly related to the severe TMJ I have several years now since a car accident dislocated my jaw, broke my nose and put my teeth through my top lip. When this pain happens, all I can do is BREATHE through it--much like labor pain. Thankfully, the longest episode has been about 1 hour, and usually happens in spurts (several times a day for a few days, then won't have a painful episode again for a week or more.) Sometimes the pain in my jaw is accompanied by deep inner ear pain. Both the jaw and ear pain will wake me from sleep when they happen at night.

I hope you find relief soon! I certainly commiserate with you!

I'm guessing it's an abscess. But then, without seeing it, I couldn't say for sure. That's your free dental advice for the day, wlol. And yes, an abscess could/would cause that sort of pain- could be in the gums, could be in the tooth- could be a headache like none you've ever known. Do as you'd said- go to the Dentist. And I'd call my doc. for additional pain meds for the condition- tell him you don't want to use your oxy that's for your back to help relieve your mouth pain. My Doc. is very understanding when I have new issues- while I'm on a contract, he also doesn't want me using my oxy that's meant for back pain when I have a TMJ flare up.

Good luck.

I have yet to go see the dentist.
My attacks, which is indeed what they seem to be, are worst at night, complete with throbbing pain that responds to no pain med I've taken.

Tomorrow is Easter, so one more day to get through. We had travel plans, so I didn't get to call the dentist yet. I am regretting not being more persistent in following through on that.

It's tough when you have multiple pain sites AND a contract meant for just one body part. I'll tell ya it's like I am falling apart these days

I ran out of my pills (yes, wrong approach!!) but I can't call my pain doctor over that. I'd get booted out. So I'll have to hang in there till Wednesday. I have some old Vics and Norcos, but I also have been taking too much APAP so I will have to perform some chemistry.

Thanks for all your replies - it gives me some strength!
