Hi,
During a yearly physical examination with my primary care physician, they will be drawing blood to do routine checks. Does anyone happen to know if they do a drug test with the blood that they draw?
My guess is that they do not do a drug test. Maybe legally they have to have my permission to do a drug test?
Sorry if this has been asked before, and thanks in advance for any feedback.

No. No drug tests during a routine exam. They (blood toxicology) tests are VERY expensive. "GC/MS" is the correct term I believe.
A U/A (urinalysis) is most likely what they would use if they suspected you were only hurting yourself...ie..needle marks, etc.

No, they do not do drug tests as part as an annual exam. If you are having one for your employer, it may be required, but I believe you will be notified, and you'd know you company policy. NOW - before you freak out - they would do a urine test, not blood in order to test for drugs. The blood test is much more expensive than urine, and unless medically necessary I doubt your insurance company would cover it (if they would period). Most employers use the urine test, however it will just show if something in a certian category is in your blood, it will not say what exact drug. I do also know that some non-narcotic drugs will give a false/positive reading on a drug test. (actual example is that you can take soma and it may show that you could be taking valuim - one is not a narcotic and one is - they are not the same exact thing, but are indeed "cousins" and did give a false/positive).
So, having said all that, if this is for your own personal annual physical my money is on there will be no drug testing done.

Thanks for the answers. You all are awesome.
Just to clarify, I will be having a routine, yearly, voluntary (not job-related) physical examination. The doctor has no reason to be suspicious of me. I know that the blood test is mainly to check cholestoral, organ functions, etc., which I appreciate having done.
And I'm on the cheapest, most ruthless HMO. They don't tend to pay for anything that is not absolutely necessary.
Even if they did do a drug check, it's OK, because I'm legit

My doctor does do a blood test as part of my annual exam, but what they are checking for is liver enzymes. So, if you are taking any medicine on a regular basis, that will be a good thing.
Just don't drink the night before the test...
