Hi, My DO is switching me from Hydro to the Durasgesic Patch 50mcg. I was taking a fairly large amount of Hydro 10/325 ( I was self medicating) He decided to give me the patch because I was self medicating because I was not getting pain releif. He also gave me neurontin. I have several questions regarding this patch. First of all, do I continue my dosage of hydro for breakthru pain, which was not a little. He told me to take max 6 a day but I was taking more than that. Will I feel withdrawels going down to that and being on the patch? Also, can I take other things such as Benadryl and sinus meds? I put the patch on at 5:30 last night and I have a little releif but I went ahead and took 2 hydros this morning and within 30 minutes I was throwing up. I dont know if this is the pills or the massive headache I woke up with. Ugh, I feel horrible. Why the headache. Why the throwing up? Can someone help me with the questions?
Thanks

Based on our PM's of what your dosage was, you are on an equianalgesic dose of Duragesic. In other words, the Duragesic 50 should match what you were taking in hydro. The 6 hydros a day you are allowed are meant ONLY for breakthrough pain.
You SHOULD NOT keep taking the dose you were on top of the Duragesic. You've got a serious problem in a few hours if you've already done this.
It takes some time for Duragesic to get going, give it time. Don't try to play catchup with the hydro.
I think the 2 hydros you toke were a bad idea, and throwing up was probably a good thing. Listen to your doctor, he knew the dose you were on, if you were honest. You didn't OD, but you are on too many opiates, so you threw up. Headaches come and go with high doses of opiates, try eating something to see if it's blood sugar related.
Sinus meds are ok (I'm assuming that means pseudoephedrine). Benadryl...wait a few days to see how you react to the Duragesic before taking a benadryl. Benadryl might be a bit too sedating with the med cocktail you're on.
Again, do NOT continue your previous dosage of hydro!!!
Aside from all this, your intended purpose in going to the doctor has failed. Duragesic will not help with the goals we discussed in the PM. If you still want to stick with that, you need to speak to him again and get in touch with that other doctor, who is likely going to have his jaw drop when he hears what happened.

Hi, I once was switched from hydro to duragesic patches.First of all the patches take 72 hours to reach a consistant blood level to maintain chronic pain. Second of all with a long acting narcotic you won't get the euphoria in your head, that you get with the hydro. I was put on the patches because of the amount of hydro I was on too. It is unsafe long term for the liver to be on that much tylenol. If your doctor has okay'ed you to take up to 6 hydro per day for break through than consider yourself lucky. The problem is that people in pain want relief now they don't want to wait 3 days for relief. Why the need for sinus meds? Are you going through a pain management Dr.?the patch could be causing the nausea, but it gets better in time and it is true that too much opiates can cause vomiting, but I think it is more likely that it is the new patch. Sometimes itching comes with it too but it also gets better. I had to take meds for the nausea while on the patches for about 3 months. This is just my experience, hope it helps. Best wishes.

I too am on the duragesic patch 50mg. My doctor started me out first for 3 weeks with 25mg and hydro for breakthru pain then after those 3 weeks he switched me to the 50mg patch and after 2 weeks on that we took it to being on for 72 hours to 48 hours, because on those last 24 hours i wasnt receiving much pain releif. Duragesic peaks between 12 and 24 hours. It was probably starting off with that high dosage patch with hydro that made you sick, becasause i even had to get used to the 25mg which made me dizzy and sick to my stomach till i got used to it. You will find that the longer you have the patch on the less hydro you will need. After getting used to the Duragesic you will feel better, maybe the doctor needs to take you down to 25mg to start with then go to 50mg. Hope you feel better.

HI, I did all my dr and told him what happened. He told me that my vomiting is probably withdrawel and also because I took the 2 hydro this morning? I didnt feel that much pain releif this morning and I knew that it took some time for the patch to work so that is why I took a dose of hydro. Within 15-30 minutes I was sick as a dog. Yawkaw SP?? (sorry if I mispelled it).. yes I was completely honest about everything with the DR. Dosage, everything. He never asked about where I got the meds and or anything. I will PM u. I do feel a little better but still pretty shaky. The DR said to only take 1 hydro for breakthrough at a max of 5 a day. If this is how I feel, forget it. I almost feel like yankin the patch off. I cant do anything. Im rushing through this so I can lay down. Ill talk to u guys later bye

It took approx 7-8 days for the startup of the duragesic for me, to get the full analgesic effect of the patch. I was not presribed b/t meds from that doc. I also had major trouble titrating the med up, and the highest I could hit was 50mcg. I ended up changing PM docs and am now on oxycontin, which works tons better at pain relief for me, and this new PM doc does prescribe b/t meds for me.
Good luck with the patch, it works for some, and not as well for others. It worked for a few months for me, before I started needed to change every two days, and then some other assorted side effects that made it necessary to change my pain relief.
good luck

Hi everyone and thank you for all the info! Yesterday my 4 yr old daughter also started throwing up so I think we both have a stomach bug! It was horrible! YUCK! To be throwing up and try to help your little girl throwing up. Its not fun. Sorry for being so graphic. Today feels a little bit better. We spent all day in bed yesterday and today we have graduated to the couch. I do have to say that the patch is working MUCH better than the hydros ever did and I like not feeling the peaks and valleys I did when I took hydros. Its constant pain relief. Its like a Godsend! WOOHOO. I only took 2 hydros yesterday and 1 today and I don't feel I have withdrawels. Is that normal when you go on the patch? I really thought I would have withdrawels dropping to such a lower dose than what I was on but hey Im sure not going to complain.! Good luck and God bless everyone!
