Benzos and U.A. Tests
      #144501 - 03/04/04 05:31 PM

Thought I might ask a question in here and see if anyone could elaborate on this one please. I am really confused when it comes to benzos and the 10 panel urineanalysis test. I have a prescription for Xanax and realize it will come up positive for any U.A. within a certain amount of time. However, I recently took a Valium when my script was almost out. About a week later, I had a drug test. The results came back positive for benzos but the tester said, "Yeah, it was positive for benzos - Valium."

I wonder why Xanax wasn't mentioned? That's my therapeuticly scheduled medication. I only took one 10 mg Valium about week before this test and Xanax daily 1 mg - even a day before the test. Anyone know why they singled out Valium? I thought that wasn't possible with the 10-panel U.A. and everything such as Ativan, Valium, Xanax, etc.. was combined into the benzos group.

I showed them my script for Xanax, they wrote it down, but now I'm worried that this U.A. could have detrimental effects since I don't currently have a script for Valium.

Your thoughts on this topic are much appreciated.

My first guess would be that valium is prescribed more than any other benzo.

I doubt they knew which benzo it really was.

I really think all that happened was the guy just wanted to let you know that it was benzos- maybe he just said Valium kinda like "yeah benzos, you know like valium?" but hinting that and not actually saying it?

I don't think you have anything to worry about- but worst comes to worse, you can get an OP script for Valium or something.

Good luck.

The UDS does not differentiate between different drugs and generally speaking between different amounts unless it is sent out to a lab. They can't tell you valium or xanax, just that you had benzo's in the urine.

I took a drug screening a couple years ago I was taking hydro and Valium. They called me up and told me I tested positive for Valium asked if I had a script and told me what to do to prove to them I had the script. (if you want the details please ask)

However two months ago I had to take another drug screening and I'm currently taking Hydro and Xanax. They told me I tested positive for opiates and to please provide the script.

So Xanax either didn't show up on the test or they didn't test for it. They do use two test. The EMIT test and the GCMS test.

The GC/MS is typically used to confirm "positive" EMIT test results. GC/MS will indicate precisely what chemical is present. This is necessary because the EMIT will only indicate whether something similar to what's being tested was found. The GC/MS is difficult and more costly, which is why the EMIT is given first.

UA tests can detect a benzo, then a seperate test can determine which one or ones a person has been taking. Its really up to the employer to determine if they want to pay extra for the advanced testing.

I wonder who is telling you "valium", do they believe all benzos are valium(as these individuals usually have little training or any type of degree). If you told the tester before hand than they would should have flaged "alprazolam" on the test, but that dosnt stop them from going into a speicific benzo test.

I'm curious about something as well. In the pre-op bloodwork that they do, how extensive is it? What I really want to know is, will it simply show a benzo, or differentiate between klonopin (sp?) and xanax? I have a script for klonopin from my local doc, and didn't care for it, so used xanax from an OP, and really don't want to get into the OP stuff with the surgeon (if asked). I figured I would take my klonopin bottle with me. I know absolutely nothing about how extensively they test you prior to major surgery. When asked by the tech if I was taking any medication, I was honest and told her that I do on occasion take "something for my anxiety" but she didn't ask what and it was left at that.

LostShopper,

No worries there. Especially for pre-op clearence. I would not suggest taking the Xanax for up to 24 hours before surgery, but you should be a-ok. Good luck with your sx.

i had surgery and took valium and went blue lipped was considered dead for a couple of minutes. the dr's willl give you plenty of what you need to get you thru this. its very dangerous not tell the surgeon what you have consumed the past 24 hours. its usually nothing by mouth after midnight or before, take care and be careful

Thanks for the info. everyone. Drew.. I think you're right, as this individual didn't have any medical training - No repercussions, as I guess my script for Alprazolam sufficed. Regards.
