Acetaminophen Doseage

I'm sure this information was posted at one time; however...... What is the maximum amount of acetaminophen that can be taken in a 24 hour period without it being considered an acute overdose? I have read that it may increase liver damage and just wondered if anyone could inform me as to toxitity of acetaminophen. Thanks.

I believe it is anything over 4 grams in a 24 hour period can be toxic.

I just found a thread called "Save your liver" that has the information I was looking for. So, anyone who reads this, head on over there, it is a good thread.

Some are advocating 2gms within a 24 hour time period now. Factors that influence how quickly tylenol is cleared from the system, include alcohol intake and existing liver function. A few have suggested not taking tylenol for a hangover as the liver is already working hard enough.

10 - 15 gms in a 24 hour time period may require immediate medical treatment. Signs and symptoms of severe liver failure may not appear for 48 - 72 hours after ingestion, by then the damage is done.

If you're concerned you can call your local poison control center.

More common among us is the intake of tylenol with hydrocodone, 6 - 10 gms daily of tylenol. Long term intake of this amount of tylenol can indeed cause liver damage. I'm not aware of any formulas that indicate how long it's ok to do this. Best to see a doc and have liver function test done.

Hope this helps.

Sam
