Just got back from my Gastro - Had a colonoscopy last week - weeeeeee. I have had flair ups from Chrohns over the past 5 years (after my gall bladder was removed) My diahhrea has been very bad lately so the doc prescribed me 3 hydro's per day One in am, one at lunch and one at dinner. Says it will keep me regular. Seems like an odd way to treat this disease? (Not that I am disappointed, TY DOC!) Anyone else have thoughts?

for really bad diahhrea they proscribe tincture of opium. very potent stuff that you can use for only a few days for fear of physical addiction. the doctor is being conservitive with the hydro.....

Opiates are good for treating diahrrea, of course they are not prescribed as often because of their stigma..go figure. But anyway, for example, Immodium AD pills are essentially the same as opiates but the chemicals that allow the med to pass through the blood/brain barrier are deactivated or taken out. That way you get no mental high or pleasure from it but you still get the anti-diahrreal effects.
I'm sure the larger dose of opiates they are giving you will help better than Immodium, though. I hope it helps and you feel better!

I use the hydro for Crohn's Disease (and endometriosis). It works wonderfully. Try to take the same amount every day as taking less or none (because you feel ... okay) causes awful stomach cramps and diarrhea (1-2 days later).
I've been on the same dosage (no tolerance build-up) for 1 1/2 years and it works like a charm.

In my experience's the best strictly diarrhea medicine is Lomotil. It consists of 2.5 mg Diphenoxylate and .025 mg Atropine (the small amount of Atropine is put in the pill to curb possible abuse of the drug). It is an opiate and is classified as a C-5 drug. I have found it to works better for me than Hydro or Codeine for the squirts. But it wouldn't do much for the stomach pain of the Chrohn's.

Thanks for the info. I has been a long time since I have tried Lomotil. But you're right, Lomotil will slow the rea, but I get such bad cramps in my intestines, I get real sweaty and nearly pass out on the toilet.

Me three...Crohn's and IBS (and a BM after severe constipation) is so painful at times. I thought I was the only one who would sit on the toilet and pray "Dear God let me survive this experience!" It hurts that badly and the involuntary cramping and expulsion is something akin to delivering a baby! YOUCH!

Thank god I'm not the only one. I do often compare a BM to child birth. I also compare the intestinal cramping to labor pains. FUNNY! Atleast I can laugh at potty humor with fellow friends like you. You guy's are the only ones that can REALLY understand

Same problem here, infact I use the lamaze breathing I learned before I gave birth, and hydro doesn't help it.

I hate when it happens in the middle of the night. The first time it did, before I was fully awake, I could have sworn I was going into labor!

Does anyone else besides the original poster use hydro for Crohn's? It really does help the cramping and diarrhea and no more of the "child bearing pain" while using the toilet (for me, anyway). I have had two bowel resections over the last 15 years and a lot of the problems I have anymore are from adhesions (scar tissue).
This is a very interesting thread!!

My grandmother suffered from severe Crohn's Disease and she was prescribed Tylenol 3 or Demerol (oral) to take on a daily basis in conjunction with Questran and Lomotil.
All you Crohn's patients need to be getting screened for colo-rectal cancer regularly!
