My doc prescribed oxy 5mg a few weeks ago, one or 2 a day. Neck / back pain. Prior to that I used hydro 5/500. We changed to oxy for its absence of tylenol.
This Oxy stuff sure makes me sweat alot!!! Does anyone have any advice on how to control? Besides staying under a fan with a cold cloth? I just took a Claritin, maybe the anthistamine will help..
I would like hear of others experiences and advice with this drug.

Not my own personal experience from Oxy, but I've had similar sweats with large doses of Hydro. It would appear to me that your body may be adjusting to the steady flow of release this medication gives you. However! You should call your doctor and report this as it may be a side effect that s/he should be consulted about. Don't just assume, let the doctor know and let doc be the one to advise you of what to do.
This community is wonderful for feedback, but when it comes to the nature of oxy and you've never been on it before, I just think it would be in your best interest to make the immediate call to your physician's office as opposed to waiting for someone to respond here. Or call your pharmacist. This drug may possibly not be best suited for you. Just looking out for your best interest.
Also, you mentioned that your doctor put you on oxy for the absence of Tylenol instead of increasing your hydro dose. May I inquire why the doctor would do that at such an early state of your treatment? Oxy is usually a last effort for pain relief. Personally, I have liver problems and can't afford anymore complications, but my doc sure wouldn't opt for oxy at this time.

Thx for the reply, lemongrass. I will talk to doc. I take the immediate release pills, so that may have something to do with the sweats. Heck, could it be the 95 degree temps outside?? hehehehe... good day everyone.

P.S. Please see my addition to my post about the oxy being given for lack of Tylenol. I'm really curious why your doctor would do that. I'd appreciate it and PM me if you find it too personal. Like I said, I have liver problems and damage already, so I was wondering. Thank you!

Strange thing with hydro for me is that when I take it and and later try and sleep it makes me SWEAT LIKE A DOG. It is not a good feeling.

I always get the sweats from hydro or oxy but it's better than sweatin through the pain! I never thought much about it though. I hope it isnt a bad reaction?
Re: Voyager, I cant imagine you layin there "sweatin like a dog" droolin' an pantin' with yous tongue hangin out an all?? heh heh heh J/K Please dont take offense by that.
not wanting upset you. That does suck when your trying to sleep and you are sweating profusely.

Hey Lemongrass,
If you don't mind me asking, is your liver damage secondary to tylenol use?

While that could be a possibility, I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C and my liver biopsy showed damage, which is typical with Hep C cases. I've apparently had the virus for some years and since I wasn't aware until 2001, I don't think I helped my liver any with the large doses of Tylenol and other OTC pain relievers I've taken throughout the years for other pain issues. By the way, if you've not read any of my other posts, I recently found out that my Hepatitis has been in remission for 18 months after undergoing treatment. But damage done to the liver is irreversible and as I've said, I can't afford anymore damage and such. Is there a particular reason that you inquired? I'm just a curious person. Always have to know the "why's" to everything.

Although its hard to get them to, my dr's sometimes give me oxy because of the side effects I experience with tylenol and ibueprofen (both cause abdominal pain.) Now, I'm only 22 and they're not really sure what's wrong with me at this point, many diagnostic studies not showing much. But, I've been in pain for three years, I think its quite obvious I'm in pain when I see the doc, and compassionate ones give out the scrips. I always try to hold out for oxy when at the dr.'s office, because I think its important for my doc's to know that this is the one medication I get little to no side effects on, and it actually WORKS. I have to take 40mg of hyrdo to get the painkilling effects of 10 oxycodone. It takes about 40mg of the time release morphine too. Those doses are exceedingly uncomfortable for me. Sometimes, I think I'd rather just lay in bed with pain all day then take anything but oxy cause of how weak it is. Sucks when my doc's won't give me it though... it happens.

How big a dose of Hydro were you taking? If you were taking alot of hydro the decrease in medication may account for the sweats. I find whenever I get the sweats, which isnt often anymore, I take another hydro and it goes away.

Lemongrass,
I was actually curious secondary to my own worries of liver damage and wanted to gauge how in fact the liver becomes damaged form tylenol use. I realized after my post that Hep C could also be a possibility. I didn't mean to pry I was just eager to solve my own ends. Thanks for your candor as it turns out.

ss70 -
FYI....dogs actually DO sweat. Our canine friends sweat through the pads on their paws.

Sweating is one of the most common side effects of Oxycodone. If you can tolerate the sweating, I'd just put up with it. I had the very same experience with it, but it works so well for the pain, I just dealt with it. Just be sure that you're taking in an extra amount of fluid (water is best) so you don't run the risk of dehydration.
Itching is also a common side effect with Oxy. The claritin will help with that side effect, but it won't do anything to curb the sweats.
Stay cool and pain free :-)

I never had a problem with sweating like that until my PM dr. put me on Duragesic patches (.25's). It started after about a week and lasted through the first month. Once in awhile I will get them a few hours after I chanve the patch, but not that often. When I get them, it's yucky. I take hydro for breakthrough pain, so if I get the sweats, I back off on the hydro and it usually settles down.

I had the same experience and my Doc put me on clonidine and boy did it help almpost immediately. It is used for blood pressure, sweats, and withdrawl from opiates. What happened to me is my body ws going through withdrawls although I was taking the prescribed amount but after awhile my body adjusted to the dose and basically I was going through withdwrawl symptoms becaseu my body wanted more. in other words I had a physical need fro an increase although my pain level had not increased.I still take the clonidine because when I don't I go through the withdrawl symtoms again and sweat. Most opiates do have this as a comlication any way. Hope this helps.
