In So Much Pain
      #150891 - 03/27/04 04:37 AM

I would like to get some advise in helping dealing with lower back pain down to my right leg. I am taking Codeine Contin 100mg from my doctor twice a day and I have never dealt with so much pain. The last 2 weeks I am getting an average of 4 hours sleep a night even taking V's to help me sleep, I wake after 4 hours in so much pain the I am crying so I do take another V just to get some more sleep which of course doesn't last so long I get up between 4am or 5am (if I am lucky) and am in tears because the pain is feeling like someone ran a knife down my back and it doesn't want to heal. I have gone to a Pain Specialist and Nero docs and because of my age 42 and weight around 120lbs they are telling me I am in good shape and if they do operate it could make things worse well heck I think I am living my worse right now. I do do alot of walking to strenghthen my leg which helped for abit and for the last month I am just in tears because it just hurts so so much. I am hoping or I should saying preying that someone out there is in the same boat and can help if there is anything else I can do besides pills all the time. I have 2 wonderful kids ages 6 and 8 years old that fix there own breakfast get themselves dress and can you believe it make there beds so mommy doesn't have to cry or hurt all the time bless there little hearts. Please help me if you can. Thank You

Painlady, That is so sad that you are in such pain and the Docs didn't really help. I'm surprised they didnt prescribe physical therapy, massage therapy, in addition to pain meds. Do you have disc problems? My daughter has 2 abnormal discs (lower back) and got reared ended which sent her into terrible pain for weeks, she couldnt even sit on the toilet without help. But with the combination of the therapies and pain meds, the pain did subside although she has flare ups quite frequently and then uses meds and ice. There's got to be something they can do for you without you having to keep increasing your pain meds. If money isn't a problem, the massage therapist can work wonders, not the feel good massage parlor massages, but the medical kind. We have one in the ortho clinic. You might need a referral but Im sure you'd get it. Good luck and wishing you to feel better soon!!

You might want to consider a chiropractor. HOWEVER, you want to find one that is more physiology oriented rather than CNS oriented. I have back problems and why sent me on the road to recovery was the chiro. I FOUGHT going to him, but my specialist insisited, telling me this guy was great, his wife has seen him, and he was correct, the chiro was the ticket. I got a wonderful exam, that documented not only my complaint, but included diagnostic testing that SHOWED my limitations. This guy did not "crack my back", but used a "drop table" method to get my SI joint back into place. I also was doing PT at the same time. I still suffer with CP, but I can be fairly productive with my medication and I'm able to really strengthen the area to make sure I never get tweaked like that again.

My heart goes out to you, hearing your story brought tears to my eyes because people do not realize how pain can affect your life in so many ways... I would like to say I tried Accupuncure as the last straw and I have to say it did help and relax me quite a bit. Walking is great and also you should try supplements if you dont already such as B12, Alpha lipoic acid these supplements have shown to improve nerve damage and ease pain.
