This neuro/PM I am seeing has scheduled injections in my rt. cervical dorsal root ganglin on the 1st. I have had 3 mris, and am having an mra on Tuesday. I had an emg last week and saw a cardio last Tuesday to get an okay to go. As I've stated before, he put me on avinza 60mg, once a day, for pain. It doesn't help much so he called in zanaflex to take 2 times a day. I am already on Soma. I did not pick up the zanaflex. Who needs 2 muscle relaxers! What kind of pain will I have after these injections? I don't even know the results of the tests on my back, neck, and head. Could this proceedure do more harm than good? I am scared of this guy. With my history of headaches and neck pain, what could be so wrong that morphine doesn't help?

debbrad, I don't know exactly what type of injection you will be getting but I can tell you I have had several trigger point/cortisone injections in my hip (I just had one this past Wednesday.) I did experience some discomfort (doc says it's from the cortisone) but it doesn't last long and these injections do bring temporary relief. I've also had epidural injections which didn't hurt because I was given an IV anesthetic. I hope you will get a good result.

Thanks Shamrock,
I've had epiderols, trigger point, and facett injections from a different PM before. This is an outpatient surgery center that I'm going to, so there will probably be some sedation. None of these have worked in the past and some have made my neck and spine hurt worse. I know this guy won't give me any breakthrough meds, so just in case I got some hydro from an OP. I know it's against the contract. But I'm going to Vegas 3 days after the proceedure to celabrate my 50th birthday and nothing will stop me. Heck, I can be in pain anywhere. Please don't flame me for it. I'm just afraid that the injections will do more harm than good. Didn't that Dr. take an oath about that?
I better stop before I blow up!

Not knowing what exactly is your dianosis, I have RSD and Cervical 5-6 herniation and nerve impingement. My pain management Dr. does selected C-6 nerve injections about every 8 weeks. I have also had various blocks including stellate ganglion blocks and many others, this one has helped the most. Your PM Doc should control your pain better and keep trying different meds till they find something that works for you. If you take a long acting narcotic, and have break through he should cover you with something for that. Have you thought about switching PM Doc's? Just a suggestion, When you are under contract, you certainly don't want to be dropped from his care for non-compliance. Have you tried talking to him more than once? I really feel for you and wish you the best and a safe trip. Just remember the short acting narcs are out of your system in 48-72 hours, should they make you give a urine screen when you get back. Best wishes, and let me know how you are doing.

I recently had a thoracic nerve root block done by my PM doc. This was a DIAGNOSTIC procedure as well as hopeful pain relieving procedure. The goal was to see if I received any pain relief from the nerve root block for the severe thoracic pain I have associated with disk and vertebral problems (including old and new fracture)...as a diagnostic procedure it was used to see IF the pain was the result of the disk pressuring the nerve root and sending referred pain into my right shoulder blade area.
My experience was that the pain I am having is NOT the result of the nerve root being affected by the bulging disk at T7/T8. The pain is from the bone-on-bone contact from my DDD and old healed (improperly as it was never diagnosed) and new fractures of T7 and T8.
So, while the block did not help my pain, it DID rule out the disk causing nerve pain in that area.
I will say that the procedure was done without sedation and wasn't too terribly painful, but I did suffer an exacerbation of the pain in that area from the intrusion and possible itrritation of the nerve root post-block.
Just my experience.
