Hydro reactions.......
      #148935 - 03/19/04 09:58 AM

Hello everyone!

I have been on Hydro on and off for the last 5 years. I feel that Hydro works great for pain but when I take it I either get depressed or very angry. I wish that I only had to take Hydro at night but this is not the case......I never know when I will need to take it.

My question is....does anyone else have the same reaction to Hydro?

Personally, I don't get "depressed" or "angry" when I'm *on* the hydro- more of an after effect- when it's wearing off or something. Hope this helps.

Same here, Greycie.

Some people just don't like opioids for their mental effects- others love them. Using as small a dose as possible that can give pain relief is probably the best way you can minimize whatever mental feelings you get. Sorry can't be more helpful- ever think of adding a benzo to the mix?

I also only get these reactions if I don't have the Hydro, although I have heard of this. My father just had a operation and they are giving him Percocet and he seems more grumpy then usual, but that could be the pain/no sleep from his operation.
I'm sure we all wish we didn't have to take anything, but you have to chose which is worse- the side effects or the pain.

Interesting thread - I have to say that I'm fine when I'm taking the hydro - but when it starts to wear off is when mostly depression seems to creep in. Goes right away with my next dose of hydro.

My father would get very angry when taking hydro. I discussed with him why he felt like that and he couldn't explain it, it's just the way he felt when he took it. He doesn't have to take it anymore now, as he found a cure for his migraines...high blood pressure meds! And he doesn't have high blood pressure to begin with!
I think that if you combined valium with the hydro, it may help take away some of the anger. Have you ever tried that? If not, why not give it a test?

Hi, I had this problem, I was grumpy for no reason, except I guess the meds..Now I take a soma and that really helped.
Good luck

I get a terrific euphoric feeling everytime I swallow a dose. When it begins to wear off I sometimes get angry and a little depressed. My wife, who also takes hydro, doesn't get the euphoric feeling like I do. Weird!! I must be lucky

I don't have a problem with taking Hydro, (such as getting grumpy or angry, for example), but I think that is because I also take Soma at the same time. (Killer combination for pain!) I do get a bit of itchiness (a commonn, but rarer side effect of using Hydro.) from the Hydro. Nothing serious, just a mild type of itch usually on my back, stomach and thighs. Not too distracting, unless that back itch is in a place I can't reach....Then it can be be quite frustrating sometimes. (I finally set up a scratching post with one of those old fashioned front door mats, the ones with prickles that seems to do the trick quite nicely when I have an itch on my back I can't actually reach.) If I do find my emotions getting a bit beyond my control, I've found that 5mg of Valium extremely useful for getting me back to an even keel again.

I also take hydro and soma and don't feel the irritation, except on occasion, and that may be because my pain will not go away even with the meds. I do believe that the combination is more effective than one or the other alone, however, I suffer from massive muscle spasms in neck, lower back and also have sciatica. Fun stuff, that is.

If I only take the hydro, I do suffer from more irritation though, than without soma, but everyone is different and I guess it depends on the person. There could be another reason, not sure.

Me, My wife and my mom all take hydro. We have long had the term"hydro Rage" it means to get real pissed off for no reason and then to realize you just took some hydro! My worst side effect though is weight gain, Ive gained 25# since I started back taking them just like last time. I have searched this board for the threads I know exist about hydo weight gain but cant find them. If anyone knows where these threads are I would appreciate it so much. Ive got to lose this weight!

I also get the itch on occasion from hydro (may have to try the scratching post idea), but no euphoria (bummer!) The only mood change that I have noticed is when the med begins to wear off and the pain returns...especially if it is too early to redose with hydro. I do, however, get very short tempered and cranky when I DON'T take my hydro...maybe it is very early withdrawal?? Not sure fortunately or unfortunately, my chronic pain is such that I have to take hydro everyday. So, the only time I have said crankiness is when I am out of my meds and waiting on the good ol FedEx delivery truck to pull up! Just my 1 1/2 cents, for what it is worth!

When I first started taking hydro, a long time ago, I had a bad problem with itching and my doc prescribed something called atarax (sp?) which made the itching stop completely. I no longer itch at all, haven't taken it for years, but it worked wonders when I did . The stuff is very inexpensive as well which was nice. Anyway, just a thought to those who experience the same problem.

I don't get euphoric or grumpy, just glad that my pain is down to a low roar. Something very strange though that I have noticed is that since I've been on hydro, I haven't sneezed once, even a few months back when I had a cold.

Yep, Jordan- that's common on opiates, same here. It's very rare to get a cold, even long-term heroin addicts report. Hard to say if it's just the very drying effect opiates have on your sinuses (remember they were used in cold medicine for centuries), or there is some sort of bizarre protective effect. Would be a very interesting study.

I think it is fabulous not having as many colds as I used to. I have noticed this effect as well. Of course, I would trade the colds for no pain any day.

Like others who posted earlier, the only time my mood is messed up, in relation to taking hydro, is when I don't have any hydro! Actually I think the hydro makes me a lot more agreeable and even tempered, if that's possible. Something to do with the absence of those throbbing spasms of pain, no doubt.

AND I have actually found it a lot easier to keep my weight regular since I started on hydro about a year ago. This is partly because I stopped drinking beer, out of worry about the alcohol/tylenol liver meltdown that seemed sure to be creeping my way!

Well, I only received my first RX from an OP yesterday and I had not taken hydro in quite a while. My nose itched so badly! It was kinda funny, I have bad sinus problems that give me headaches and the hydro helped tremendously with the sinus drainage, cough, and headache but then it made my nose itch worse than it ever did due to sinus problems!

Then last night I woke up at about 2am with the worst rebound headache! I didn't want to take another hydro because I normally do not have headaches at night and because I didn't want to rebound again. I took advil and tried to go back to sleep and the headache finally went away after a little while.

Anybody else deal with rebound headaches from hydro? Got any advice?

I have taken Hydro for my migraines many of times. Once I woke up, actually I don't think I slept a wink, nevertheless, got out of bed Head was ready to explode, I took 2 Norc's 10/325's, though doc says 1. I beleive this was the only time I had really felt "euphoria" if thats what peole call it, I found after the pain went away, I felt energy and doing all kinds of things. Which was great considering an hour earlier I was moaning in bed ready to chop my head off! So maybe that good mood was nothing more than reflief or likely a combination!

But to get back to your quote, while the Norco killed the migraine well. I did notice about a few hours later I felt a weird type of headache come back on me like a tension type but not quite. For me IMO if I take a larger amount of Norco for Migraines, it seems as if sometimes I will get another headache hours later. Usually If I take an Ultram or two taken w/ an ibuprofin or two seems to take care of that other headache.

I have heard using Opiods for HA's can cause rebound HA's, unfortunately these "Rebounds" can be worse than the HA was originally. From what I know medically they really don't know why or what it is that causes this, or why it seems to be related to only taking them for headache relief. However by definition a rebound headache occurs after taking any type of Opiod based pain med for a longer period of time, then after quickly stopping, 12 - 24 hrs later the rebound can occur. My understanding of this however was that this phenomena (I use that term as very little is known as to what causes rebound HA's) seems limited only when say Vicodin or other type med is used for HEADACHES only. As they have no indication of patients getting rebound HA's when taking their meds for thinks like back pain or others, it does seem limited only to headaches, not sure about my Migraines though...yet .

In my case, like I said; I too will at times get an annoying headache a few hours later after taking a larger dose to rid of migraine. Due to the definitions I just exlplained I do not feel as if my headaches afterwards are due to "rebound" rather some other reason unknown. A side effect that is not great enoough to discontnue its use in IMO. Though I must say they are "annoying" at the least.

Anyways, thats how I understand everything, and thats is merely my 2 cents worth.

Hope that helps!!

when i took hydro i would wake up with raging headaches! i mean i could not see, only happened with hydro, for me the only thing that takes away a headache fast is excedrin, take 2 go back to sleep if you can and when you wake up it should be gone, i have heard its a narcotic headache if that makes sense. hydro also totally interferes with my sleeping, dont take it at night at least this was my experience.

take care

I agree mermaid...
The entire time I was on hydro, it severly affected my sleep (among other things). Took me forever to figure out that the late night dose of hydro was causing all my problems. That part I DON'T miss!!
