You don't realize how you take pissing for granted until you can't pee anymore. I have been to the hospital a few times with this problem and don't want them to catch on. Any suggestions to make this simple process less stressful when I take pain pills? Thanks to everybody at DB.com

I have that problem sometimes with stadol. I run water in the bathroom, just like they did after giving birth. Or, even sometimes the sink and the bathtub. I just try to relax and not think about how hard it is to go. sometimes even when I start going, I have to start over again.
There. there's something no one knew about me, not even my family, they just think I"m slooooow.

I have done the whole running water thing, every kind of meditation technique as funny as it sounds. None of which works that well for me. It has costed me a lot of money for something that is suppose to happen so naturely. A funny subject I know. I could use any other helpful hints. Thanks.

That happened to me after I started taking tramadol. At first I assumed it was the kidney stones causing the problem. After a few days it was back to normal. Though I 'think' it was helped by drinking a lot of distilled water (.48 a gallon at wally world), no more soft drinks. Just one suggestion.

Drink lots of water. Also when you feel the urge go into the BR and sit on the toilet for a short time. When the urge gets intense but you still can't go stand up stradling the toilet and give a gentle push. Your flow should start and then you can re-seat to finish. When you are not busy, watching tv or other, contract you Kuegal muscles for about 3 minutes. As we get older our muscles aren't as strong especially if you have had children by vaginal delivery (don't know if this applies). Hope my suggestions help. turcica

Thank You guys so much for the helpful tid bits. It's a stress reliever just having something new to try. I have a couple of questions though. Someone said something about contracting or exercising your Kuegal muscles especially if you have had kids. I don't have any kid's and being a gymnast it seems like my muscles (pee muscles) may be too strong. I feel like that the result is the reason I spasm up so bad making it impossible to go pee on my own. I know that this isn't the only reasoning, but could having super strong pee muscles make you spasm up more frequently??? There was a doctor that I had many ago and she wrote me a prescription for this. Of course I lost the prescription, and can't remember what it was, or who the doctor was. That is my luck. It was a weird name. Has any one heard of such a thing??? Everyone seems very helpful, I really can't thank everyone enough. It's nice to know I am not alone.

I'm former military, (where I was trained in SERIOUS bladder control, as in...Holding it ALL day long after drinking a gallon of water), as well as being medically trained. I sometimes have the same problem with going to the bathroom after taking my pain meds. As a last resort option, I use a catheter. A French 8 to be precise. Looks intimidating to use on yourself, and does feel very odd the first several times you do use it. But...once used to it and over the squeamishness of actually inserting a catheter into yourself, it can be a right godsend when you really, really, really need to go, and nothing is happening. Just insert, pee, remove, rinse and store in a jar of antiseptic solution. You don't have to worry about blowing up the little ballon thing either. I'm so used to it, I don't even use a lubricant anymore.
It super nifty for women cause they can pee standing up just like a guy. I've taught several women (and men) how to correctly insert a catheter so they can pee when all else fails. You can purchase them from either medical suppliers or some of the more kinky sex aids sites online. If you would like further details, by all means PM me and I think I can walk you through the process of correctly inserting a catheter when all else fails in getting some relief from an overfull bladder.

I had horrible urinary retention while on MSContin. Running the sink faucet and thinking about a waterfall (sounds corny, but it worked!) would usually solve the problem. Thankfully, I never had the problem so badly that I needed catheterization.
As a last resort, pyridium (Azo Standard/Uristat OTC) numbs the urethra and does help urinary retention. Its a life-saving product for burning, painful UTIs or bladder irritation, but it turns your pee bright orange to bright yellow and stains!

A question for you. do you have burning when you try to pee and can't? I had that when I had a bladder infection, felt like I had to pee but couldn't go. I'll PM the way to relieve it, cuz it's not really appropriate here. It's also something else you could try to help you go.

I have always had the constipation from pain relievers, but just recently I have had hesitancy too. I developed a little technique that helps me. I cough three or four times and grab a nearby surface (such as the side of the tub and squeeze). It may take a few seconds, but it works for me. AND you always have your cough with you. Flavia

I don't get urinary retention from pain meds but I get it from having had recurrent UTIs most of my life. I have to lean over and push on my lower abdomin and push as hard as I can like I am having a BM to get the pee going sometimes. I'm afraid that I am going to pop a blood vessel in my head one day from straining.

Urine retention is a wide spread problem with pain med users, now the best thing we all could do is drinks lots of water, im talking 8 8ounce glass a day or near that much, soda pop, coffee, tea, juices, doesnt really help, juices are better that coffe and soda though, but really try drinking some water, it will definetly help you with the retention factor and drink until it goes from dark to almost clear, there are many other health benifits that come from drinking enough water throughout the day.. Give it a try, I would be willing to bet that this will work alot of you.....go easy everyone.. its been really nice reading all of you...

After last nite I'm afraid to take any hydro at all. I'm cutting my dose until I can figure a solution. This bladder paralysis is for the birds.
Thanks for the advise though.
Do you think drinking more water would help? I'm afraid to drink any liquids at this point.
Would drinking more water sort of "force the issue"?
