Keepsake,
I searched the net looking for common hiccup cures and found that swallowing a teaspoon of sugar was on the top of the list. My family has used that one for years. Drinking water does not always work and now I know why.
Hiccups are caused by an uncontrollable spasm in the diaphragm, (the "breathing" muscle). Often, this spasm is triggered by irritable conditions in the smooth muscles of the stomach or the esophagus. The cure, of course, would be to change the condition of the "smooth muscle" or the environment. Sugar is a rough texture against this muscle, thus swallowing sugar rubs against the esophagus, changing the current irritation to a new irritation (the sugar) and halting the hiccups.
One of the causes listed for hiccups was medications, however hydro was not listed, muscle relaxers were. Admittedly, I did not read the entire listing, but thought that just swallowing the tablet, which probably leaves a trail of powder down your throat, would be enough to trigger the "hics".
Theory only...

I only got the hiccups from the Hydro the other day (Saturday) and like I said it happened 3-4 times. Other than than I've never had a problem with H=h. Luckily mine were pretty quiet, which for me is abnormal.
Ok, I'm sorry, but I tried that drink upside down thing zillions of times as a kid and did nothing more than make a monster mess. Am I truely ungraceful or is there a knack for it (just kidding - don't need an answer - told ya the 10 sips thing works 100% of the time for me).
Hey, could be worse, we could all be making loud noises from someplace other than our diaphrams...

Since I also get this problem with methadone and my medication for the most part of the past 8.5 years (I recently changed to pills) was liquid, the theory probably isn't correct.
My theory would be a connection to the medication-induced muslce jerks I get--especially when relaxed or nearly asleep. Had this same involuntary muscle jerking from morphine, oxycodone and methadone, so I believe it is opioid-induced for sure. And nothing to do with the FORM of the medication, but more likely the EFFECT of the medication.
That's my theory and I'm stickin' to it!

Actually the sugar worked for both my kids but only when they were babies. My sister almost had a fit when I gave her baby daughter some but it worked. Never thought to try for an adult!

I get hiccups a lot from eating or drinking something too fast. The only thing that ever works for me is to lie down, close my eyes, try to become as relaxed as possible, breath deeply and regularly, and then they go away within a couple of minutes. As long as I am up and doing things they wont go away. This is hard to do when you are at work or you are trying to take care of your kids though.

The teaspoon of sugar does work....I have tried it many times and within a few minutes the hiccups are gone. It is the easiest and tastiest way to cure them!!

Can you use brown sugar, its tastier.lol. I am one of those who drinks water while bending over and drinking from the opposite side of the glass, as posted earlier its easier to demonstrate than explain but I have found that Ive built up a "tolerance" to that and my hiccups will return if I eat bread...go figure. And the posts about smoking are too funny because I too try to time a puff right after I hiccup and I probably look goofy as can be.

What works for me to cure the hiccups is, just sit there and really concentrate on when the next hiccup is gonna come and keep thinking about it. After some time thet are gone, usually takes me less than 5 min to get rid of them.
