Phenergan Suppositories~ Does anyone use them??
      #147848 - 03/15/04 06:04 PM

Question for you:

Along with the back problems, I get frequent migraines w/vomiting. For that, I have found Phenergan Suppositories to work miracles.
The only problem that I can see is that fact that my PCP only calls in a prescription for 8 (max) at a time. So I am constantly calling for refills and having to run to the pharmacy. (not too practical with the twins)
I don't understand why they are so hesitant to prescribe them. My sister who lives about 10 hours from me has run into the same problem with her PCP.
I am missing something? It's not a narcotic, it's an anti nausea med so what's the big deal??
Have any of you run into this problem and do you know if you can order these from on of the OP's??

Thanks~

Wow! I've never had a problem getting tons of them montly. I switched from phenergan to compazine though. I hate phenergan pills and the supp. burn too much to me. So, compazine has been the same with me. Just different a little, but still just as valuable. NOw, I've got a doc that gave me a TON of Zofran, but insurance only covers 12 a month. My pcp had no problem giving me 40 in a month. I wouldn't use all those, but she didn't have a problem doing it. Just ask yours why they don't prescribe more. Or let you mix it up a little with pills and supp. that's what I do.

Phenergan Supp. are great for vomiting, when you cannot take meds orally. Obviously, taking meds orally would be much better, but when you cannot even keep water down you don't have a choice. It also, potentiates narcotics and can promote sleep. I do not understand why a Doctor would limit the amount prescribed, I would probably ask him.

DEA considers it a drug of abuse. Promethazine is listed by the DEA as commonly abused in Houston:

Ok that is bizarre! I checked out the link and you are right, but why? Who wants to abuse a suppository??
These are life savers when I have the migraine and need to stop the vomiting, but to use them for any other reason is just inconceivable to me.

Thanks though~
