What is the difference between 5/500 and 10/500?
      #147366 - 03/14/04 01:07 AM

What is the difference between hydro 5/500 and 10/500? I have always had the 5/500's prescribed to me, however, it seems that the majority of people have 10/500's. Is it stronger, or have a different feeling? Most OP's seem to mostly only have the 10/500 and not the 5/500. Sorry for the ignorance.

Thanks in advance

The 5 and 10 in the 5/500 and 10/500, means the amount of hydrocodone in each pill. The 500 is the amount of tylenol. With that being said, basically 10 means more of the effective ingredient.

5/500 =5mg hydrocodone 500mg tylenol
7.5/500 =7.5mg hydrocodone 500mg tylenol
10/500 =10mg hydrocodone 500mg tylenol

10/325 =10mg hydrocodone 325mg tylenol (Norco Standard)

5/650 =5mg hydrocodone 650mg tylenol
7.5/650 =7.5mg hydrocodone 650mg tylenol
10/650 =10mg hydrocodone 650mg tylenol

and so on ... etc.

i would venture to say all op's will prescribe 5/500 if that is what your records indicate or you request. i know all the pharmacies have all the combinations of hydro. some even compound meds.

One could also say in defense of the liver that ordering 10/325 is a good option becasue as we all know TOO WELL the APAP(tylenol) will destroy your poor liver over time..........and JAS, there is NO IGNORANCE in asking a valid question, that's what this board is for, to ask, to answer, to help each other out when we need it..............
Take care-

Plus, like Summer said, by ordering the 10/325s it not only saves your liver, you can break them in half since you only use the 5 mgs, giving you more meds for your money.

So you are saying that the 10/500 can be broken in half and give the same effect? Because if this is true, it could save me a great deal of money. What is the APAP used for anyhow?

If you break the 10/500 in half you will then have 5/250 which is fine and better on your liver and like you said you would save alot of money and your meds. would last twice as long.

All of you are correct but this person MAY not need such a large dose.

Remember taking the least amount that is effective is always your best bet in order NOT to build tolerance. Now if you are taking the 5/500 over a period of time (greater than 3 months) and feel that you need to take more than six per day then you might consider increasing the dose of hydrocodone.

Otherwise, the less hydro you take the better off you will be because you won't have to deal as much with issues such as tolerance, dependence and addiction.

good luck and let us know how it goes.

Voyager is right. You may want to make sure you even need this strong of medication for your problem. There are a lot of other types of pain relievers that can help just as much, if you haven't already tried them out. Hydro is most effective when used for short periods of time, so make sure with your doctor, this is what you actually need.

There is no need to start off with a bang, if you can settle with less.

Good luck and stay safe.

Right now I take half a 5/500 every 6 hours (half takes the pain away just fine, plus I'm 135lbs) but it is still expensive. I was thinking that if I started getting 10/500 I could take 1/4 and save money. I was just considered that the mixture would have a different effect.

You could try that, but I think it would be hard to cut the halfs in half, even with a pill splitter. If you could, the Tylenol would be down to 125 mg, but you could always take it with an extra regular (325 mg) Tylenol. As a practical matter, if you can afford it I'd stick with the 5 mg pills. By the way, does plain Tylenol come in strengths lower than regular 325 mg, like children's Tylenol, not liquid but pills. I know you can get low dose aspirin, something like 81 mg, but that's used to prevent strokes or heart disease, I forget which, and not for pain.

The 81 mg Asprin is St Josephs, the little orange pill with the little soldier on the box. Bayer has now aslo started making 81 mg asprin.
Just thought I'd share-
