I've used this board many times to complain about doctor office visits and pharmacies that just stink. Does any one have stories about times that doctors or pharmacies have been REALLY cool to them or helped them way beyond their expectations?(btw- not talking about OP's, just regular hometown doc, emergency rooms, etc...)
(Also not sure if this is in the right forum or not.)

I just posted one on Monday, actually.
Here's the thread.
But a good idea, Saraba! It's why I posted mine, too.

My little story is more about doctors and ERs than doctors and pharmacies.
I'm a long time headache and migraine sufferer. Every once in a while I get hit with multi-day migraines, that left untreated can go on for up to 14 days.
About 6 weeks back, I got hit with the first multi-day migraine I'd had in 5 years. I had a friend take me to the nearest ER after suffering for 5 solid days. (I live in the boonies, so nearest means over 50 miles away!) In the 5 days I'd been suffering, I was taking up to 100mg a day of Hydro and at least that much again of Promethazine. I'd pretty much gone through my entire prescription of both in that time period. Not even the excessive amounts of Soma I was also taking helped in the least.
Went through triage with all the speed of a snail, walking from one office to another filling out endless forms. I was finally placed into a brightly lit examination room, with one of those totally uncomfortable examination half beds (where it was impossible to actually lie down!)....and left in there for 45 mins. No monitoring, and no one checking if I was even still concious.
Even pulling my cap as low as it would go, and keeping my very dark sunglasses on didn't help escape the pounding of all that bright light in my eyes. (I'm seriously photosensative when I have a migraine.) The longer I stayed in that light, the worse the nausea became.
The doctor finally comes in and starts yanking my head in all directions as he 'examines' me. Then he says he can't do anything until he has spoken to my PCP. This is on a late Sunday afternoon, and my PCP is off enjoying some time with her family. The doctor finally decides I am nothing more than a junkie and refuses to treat my pain and (by now, serious) nausea at all. I left, untreated, insulted and very, very angry.
Contrast that experience against another ER I had to go to not two weeks later with exactly the same problem. (Although, I only waited two days this time instead of 5.)
Here, I was quickly rushed through triage and popped into a darkened room on a proper stretcher (where I could lie flat and try to relax)...fully monitored for BP and pulse. (Some automatic gizmo that took both about every two minutes.) BP was topping out at 170/110!!! (My BP is usually around 110/70, which isn't bad for a 40 year old man.) Pulse was over 100. It was pretty obvious I was in some serious pain!
The doctor came in within 15 mins, took less than 5 to look at the monitoring record and asks if I had ever had Nubain before. I hadn't, and told him so. He explained that it is a lot like Demerol, but not as sedating. I okayed the use of the Nubain and the nurse came in very shortly afterwards with a shot of Nubain and Promethazine. Within 25 mins, I was back on my feet and feeling vastly improved. At no point was I accused of being a junkie, or told how the (medical) system had hurt me.
When the bills from both ERs came in....Guess which one I paid? Yep, the second one. I had no intention of paying anyone for the lack of treatment and insulting behavior handed out to me at the first ER I had gone to. If I ever get hit with another multi-day migraine, I'm going to the second ER for sure, because I was treated as a person with a (medical) problem and not a junkie looking to get high.

Just a quick update on the actual bill received from the second ER I visited due to having a multi-day migraine. They have been great about letting me pay that bill over time. Got hit with some LARGE unexpected bills this month that have left me short in the money department. The ER I AM going to pay completely understood and have arranged a payment schedule over 6 months that allows me to pay their bill without shorting myself in other areas. Top knotch service in all ways, In fact my payments don't actually start until mid-April. A real godsend as I still have to get my regular meds from my PCP and well as the online consult service I use. This particular ER gets a thumbs up from me for both their compassionate treatment of my medical condition, and they accomadating way they worked out my payment schedule.

I had to post my most recent appointment at the pain clinic (inner city hospital pain clinic, by the way)...
I was simply ASTOUNDED by the absolute sincere compassion I am always shown by the pain doc and the nursing staff there!
I have shared my story here on DB many times in the past months, so most of you know I had the lovely "drug-seeker" tag attached to my name for the past several years as a result of choosing methadone maintenance for pain control. Anyway, when I started with this pain clinic 6 weeks ago, I had prepared a type-written history of my medical illnesses, pain meds history, and all the sordid details from doctors and the MM program. I also brought my medical records for the past 9-10 years. Even with all the sordid details, they were willing to accept me into their pain program and prescribed a substantially higher dose of methadone than I was currently taking.
Today was a medication assessment and he upped my dose by adding a 4th dosing period to my day. (Dosing 4x a day instead of 3x a day)...In addition to the usual questions about how my pain has been the past 2 weeks and what side effects I was experiencing, he asked if I just wanted my doses increased or would I like an extra dose per day. I asked for his recommendation and accepted it.
He has always been so extremely compassionate and remarked that he thought I had been treated abysmally by my physicians in the past--especially by the one who said one day I was an addict and to never come back. He said it's doctors like that who just prescribe a narcotic to get you out of their hair, then can't figure out WHY a patient becomes dependent after several months or even years of such treatment. And he was SO right! That was exactly the attitude the headache doc had about me--sometimes he didn't even speak to me or examine me--he'd just send in a shot of Demerol and send me on my merry way.
So...I can't say enough positive things about my pain clinic. They are absolutely fantastic! They even rate a fruit basket for the holidays! Ah, hell, we're all a little fruity here and there!
