password request not from me!
      #145583 - 03/08/04 04:16 PM

Hi all...I was wondering if this had ever happened to anybody on here.I just checked my yahoo mail and there was an automated note from DB saying someone from the following IP address ###.#.###.# requested my password, I wasn't sure if I should write the IP address or not. They then gave me a temporary password, isn't this strange? I tried to do a reverse search on the IP and it is in Amsterdam??? ANybody have any ideas or has this happened to everybody??? Thanks all...Wren

That is really weird???? Does anyone know that you belong to this board? Did you give any members your email address?
That is the only way I could see that happening!

I would send a message to the mods, see what they say!

I am curious as well!

It sounds like someone was trying to log in as you. With most forum software, when you change or request your password, it'll send you an email to verify it was you that made the request.

Look at the full headers, is it from drugbuyers? If so, then someone (or a net spam bot) tried to get your password. I would change your password again asap, to be safe.

Not sure why anyone would care to log on as another as this site though.

Wren, I would contact DB right away and clear this up! I think it is a bit too strange.

It might be different now, but the last time i forgot my password here, all it asked for was the username (handle) and it e-mailed a temporary password to the e-mail DB has for me.

Maybe someone was playing with you and typed in your username. I'd get the full e-mail with all the header information from Yahoo e-mail and forward it to DB so they can look up the IP address that the new password request came from. If the request for a temporary password came from another member, they should probably ban that member for trying to hack your account ... unless it was just a mistake ... and if they can figure out who did it.

In any case, you should change all your passwords on anything important. Someone may be trying to hack your account(s).

I don't know your home computer situation, but make sure you have an up-to-date firewall and check for spyware. It's possible for malware to install a keyboard logger and harvest usernames and passwords from the unsuspecting.

Do a Google to find directions on securing your system. Windoze is not the most secure OS, but it can be hardened with add-ons and it doesn't hurt to be behind a router that does stateful packet inspection (SPI). And the free version of ZoneAlarm is quite good. When i put my computers behind a cheap D-Link 802.11b router, instead of ZoneAlarm blocking hundreds of intrusion attempts a day, now i get none ... so it's worth it to have that hardware firewall even though i decided not to use wireless at home ... partly out of security concerns.

hi all...thanks for all the helpful suggestions! I guess I could have hit a wrong key but there is still the fact that it showed the IP addythat requested the password so that would not make sense.I went ahead and changed a couple of important passwords to be sure.I have been hacked before and it was a big mess! I am going to go ahead and post the IP and see if anybody can make sense of it,there is no reason for me to protect them! The IP is 217.4.161.8 anywho thanks everybody for your help! take care one and all! Wren'

It has not happened to me on this site, however, it has done so on sites like ebay and paypal. Both of the companies have steps in finding out if a request is a fraud. During these times to easy hacking access one needs to be careful.

Hi there Princeton,oh and WELCOME by the way! I have had a ton of spoof emails from Ebay and Paypal, lately on an almost daily basis but those are pretty obvious as they ask for a password which we all know is a big nono.I guess I just thought this was weird as I had just left DB and had to check yahoo mail which is my main email and it was right when I left here that it said someone had asked for my password from that IP which turns out to be in Amsterdam.Oh well may just be a weird unsolved mystery!Having been hacked before I get a bit nervous though.I may change all passwords today.TY everybody for your posts!
