does anyone have experience with taking both hydromorphone (dilaudid) and hydrocodone/oxycodone?
if so, is hydromorphone superior at killing pain? and what other subjective differences are there?

My best friend used to get the dilaudid (morphone) and he had to take it IV to get results. I don't approve of this but none the less it's what he did. I've had them orally and they do absolutely nothing for me.

I think I join a long list of people who can say that, although hydromorphone has a reputation for being a very strong drug, it is not stunningly effective as an oral med. I would say its actual pain relieving properties are similar to hydrocodone, maybe even oxycodone, but it is a rather short-acting drug.
Intravenously, however, hydromorphone is supposed to be really impressive.
Interestingly, I think most people measure a narcotic's effect by how buzzed they can get on it, and I don't blame them. Again, Dilaudid is not all that impressive in that department, and once again, IV is a whole different story. I've had Dilaudid IV, and not only did it take away substantial amounts of pain, it sent me off to happy land for a short while. When I took Dilaudid pills for acute pain, though, not much joy or relief.
I know it's almost considered a sin to enjoy pain meds these days, but I just wanted to be honest here.

hi red, i dont think anyone should feel guilty about the positive "side effects" of opioids. it seems we've all been brainwashed into thinking feeling mentally better is wrong. there are many dangerious substances, yet it is only ones that alter mental wellbeing that are demonized and controled, and many of them arent dangerious! there are two facts about opioids to consider:
1) they are of the most safe and physically harmless drugs, causing retardation of bowel movements as the only main common side effect of a non excessive dose.
2) if someone takes opioids regularly, they are then subject to a horrible withdrawl upon stoping or reducing.
from these two facts about opioids there can be no logical reason to demonize them like big brother has. there must be another reason that has nothing to do at all with our safty or wellbeing.
P.S. i hope you all have a nice vote this election for president. bot GW Bush and John Kerry are members of skull and bones, a POWERFUL elite secret society that was heavily involved in opium trade since its creation in 1832. they sure did a good job of eliminating the compitition and jacking up the prices by prohibition. i wonder how things are going in afghanastan with the pipeline and opium fields
have a pain free night people

I hate big brother telling me what I can and can't take, and I sure don't appreciate his concern over whether opiates make me feel better, mentally. It's my business.
People don't like you to talk politics on a board such as this one. Which is a great shame, because subjects like opiate/opioid regulation and the police state of pain medicine are political in nature. But sometimes people want you to stick to the chit-chat and don't want you getting serious for fear of disturbing the peace. Kind of a 'Pleasantville' attitude.
To this day I will never understand why I offended a certain fellow board member when I offered my opinions on a certain radio talk-show host. I was only the umpteenth person to join the discussions, and my opinions didn't mean to offend anyone, but still, I must have hit a nerve at the time, because her message to me has very unfriendly. The funny thing is that she and I seemed to agree on most anything. Just shows you how people can get all in a tizzy when the debate becomes political.
Still, we need to break the rules sometimes, in order to make progess, and some day we will all have the deal with the politics in some way. For me that was dealing with a doctor who let me suffer in pain, even though I sometimes wanted to just die.
Bush or Kerry - very frightening, at least I can say that without sounding too much like I am taking sides.
OK got on my high-horse again - forgive me!
Cheers,
Red

HYDROMORPHONE WORKS A LITTLE BETTER ON SEVERE PAIN BUT THE TRADE OFF IS EXTREME DEPENDANCE ON THE MORPHINE AND VERY UGLY WITHDRAWLS. HYDROCODONE WORKS GREAT FOR MDERATE TO SEVERE PAIN, BUT LESS DEPENDANCE AND MILD WITHDRAWL. I WOULD ONLY TAKE THE DILAUDID TO BRING THE PAIN UNDER CONTROL,(1 OR 2 DAYS) THEN SWITCH OVER TO HYDROCODONE. HOPE THIS HELPS. STEVE007
