Skin Cancer Help!!
      #144853 - 03/05/04 08:26 PM

I was wondering if anyone has ever been diagnosed with skin cancer. I have found some questionable spots on my arm and leg and looked at a web site and the spots look really close to what they were showing. Obviously I am going to make a Doctor's appt but was wondering if anyone has been through this and what happened. Thanks!!

i have damage on my shoulders and upper back to this day from a single sun burn. in 1995 i went swimming, i always used sunblock, even back then at age 15, but that one day i didnt have any sun block to use and i made a big mistake. afterwards i was in hard pain for 3 days and intense iching for another 3 days, with my skin comming off. now there are dark marks and pimples and freakles there. i hope a single bad sunburn that caused some borderline 2nd degree burns with blisters isnt going to cause me to get skin cancer some day.

Take vitamin E, eat apple seeds or appracot pits for the vitamin B17* and have the doctor look at it

* Vitamin B-17 is found in apple seeds and some other foods in lower levels. the FDA banned vitamin B-17 suppliments after a book came out entitled "A world without cancer". the book was on vitamin B-17 and cancer.

Hi -

I not only have had a skin cancer removed, but I also am a nurse and worked in Dermatology for several years. There are 2 most common skin cancers - basal cell & squamous cell. These are not only the most common forms, they are also the least harmful. Then of course, there is melanoma, which is the very serious type of skin cancer.

I had a basal cell carcinoma on my right collarbone. It was very easily removed with a simple surgical procedure that is done in the office. The sutures were taken out about 10 days later and I've had no problems since. However, I do get a total skin exam yearly by my dermatologist.

Most skin cancers are due to over-exposure to the sun that we subject ourselves to before 18 years of age. Some of the lesions that you are seeing on your skin could be seborrheic keratosis, which are "pre-cancerous" growths. These are usually treated and removed with cryotherapy, which is a freezing method. This is also a very simple procedure.

Definitely make an appointment with a dermatologist to have your skin thoroughly checked out. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. I might know the answer.

I hope this information is helpful and puts your mind at ease.
Take care,
Karen

Thanks guys,

Karen,

The spots and I am concerned about are raised "bumps" that have a shiny waxy look to them. I have found 2. What is the melanoma thing and what does it look like? Thanks !!

Leapwells -

Melanoma is usually very black with an irregular shape and larger than a pencil eraser in diameter.

When you see the doctor, if he/she has any question about any lesion on your skin, they will biopsy it. There are 2 ways to biopsy - shave or punch. Shaving is just what it sounds like - they numb the area and then shave the top off of the lesion and use a product to cauterize or stop the bleeding. A punch biopsy is similar to a cookie cutter - they numb the area and take a small and deeper piece of the lesion in question. This method requires 2 or 3 sutures. Both procedures are very simple. The specimen is then sent off to a skin pathologist for an official diagnosis. Based on the diagnosis, there may or may not be additional treatment needed.

The lesions you are descibing on your skin don't sound too worrisome, but do get them checked.

If I can be of further help, let me know.
Karen

THere is a prescription topical medication that can be used to keep pre-cancerous lesions at bay. These are called actinic keratosis. THey can appear as scaley patches that if picked at can become red and then reform the scale. The med is called Efudex. I've found it very effective and less likely to cause scaring. Ask you Doc about it.

My husband had spent A LOT of time in the sun and in his 40's he started having strange skin spots. The dermatologist said it was from sun damage and to keep an eye on them. I am glad you are going to see a doctor and have this checked, it is probably just damage to your skin! I'm a positive thinker

I come from a country that is seen as the skin cancer capital of the world. Our lifestyle is so outdoors based, that almost every one has some kind of sun damage, not always cancerous in nature. Our doctors, even the local GPs take an extensive training course in recognizing the various forms of sun damage and which are cancerous and which are not.

Back in my very early 20's, I had a spot on my back that was very black, larger than my thumbnail, irregular and would at times bleed a little. It was in a place I couldn't actually see it for myself, but a girlfriend noticed it one night. I took myself off to my local GP the very next morning.

He took one, long look and pronounced it to be Melanoma. I very quickly found myself face down on an examination bed, numbed up and the doctor removed the Melanoma, using a deep V cut that was easily three quarters of an inch all around of the spot. Stitched me up and sent me off home again. The spot that had been removed was examined by a specialist.

Oddly enough....a few years later, I took a bullet in the back in just the place the original scar was. You should see the one I have now. Makes for much better after dinner conversations than saying I had a Melanoma removed.

Within a matter of days, I received a call to please come to his office again. That is when he told me what he had removed. Scared the living daylights out of me, even though it was now gone. The fright was worth it however. I now get my skin checked every 6 months, without fail...and I've never had another one in the 20 odd years since. The one and only Melanoma I had was caught before it had spread too much, and that has greatly relieved my mind.

Strange looking spots can easily scare the daylights out of you....But never let it hold you back from seeking treatment as soon as you are aware of it.

Now, in our schools, every child entering pre-school is given a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen...as well as being taught the dangers of too much exposure to the sun. They also learn what those odd (usually benign) little spots are, and what to do when they do find one. Every doctor and nurse in my country is taught what to look for, especially if said spot is not yet a full blown Melanoma. Most odd looking spots are benign, but it never hurts to have them checked by a professional. Having one Melanoma doesn't mean you will get more.

My country now has a well publisized campaign of Slip, Slop Slap. Slip on a shirt, Slop on the sunscreen and Slap on a hat. It has dropped the Melanoma rate by 80% over the past 10 years.

WOW! I'm really glad you were so lucky to get it all in one fell swoop.

I was always told that melanoma was a particularly vicious cancer that was highly metastic. My grandfather had a small spot removed from his ear (of all places) and they gave him the whole round of chemo "just in case." That was a few years ago now and he has had no recurrences.

Bet that bullet wound IS a great story of interest!

Care to share? (C'mon, PLEEEEEEEASE???!!!????)

Is Melanoma typically dark spots? The ones that I am concerned about are light. Thanks all for your insights. You guys are great!!

I have the same question about skin cancer. I have had a black scaly spot on the side of my head for years. I am a blonde and have had a sunburn on my scalp many time in my youth. LOL, typical in Texas. My pcp tells me it's an age spot! I am almost 50 now, but it's been there since my early thirties. It has gotten larger. My long time hairdresser has commented that it is getting bigger and she is even worried about it. What to do. Am I just being silly.
Peace,
Deb

You're not being silly, Deb. If the spot has been getting bigger, then DEMAND that your doctor do a biopsy asap. Keep after him throughout your entire appointment time and basically let him know that you are not budging until he does a biopsy of that spot. Skin cancer can KILL you if left untreated for too long. Demand that biopsy and don't budge from your position. It's YOUR body and thus YOUR choice. If he won't do it, for whatever reason he feels justified explaining...let him know that you will see another doctor and will sue the a$$ off him if and when the result comes back as positive. His attitude is awful. No doctor has the right to simply fob you off and tell you it is just age spots or some such thing.

I get my own PCP to do a full body check every 6 months because I did (once) have a single spot that was cancerous. 20+ years later, and with my due diligance, I've never had another. You need to get it across to this doctor that he is being paid by you to treat your conditions. Even if it turns out to be benign (which happens about 99% of the time) that is still not reason enough for this doctor to simply ignore it. You have a spot that is growing larger and needs to be looked at by a professional.

Stand your ground girl. It's your body and something about it is worrying you. Get it checked and either relieve the worry or have the spot removed permanently.
