I firured that there is got to be somebody around here who might have some insight to help me. I have had a seemingly unlimited script of Tramadol (Ultram) 240/mo. w/ 5 refills. So I have been taking it as prescribed for quite a while now. It helped out at first... Doc's thinking was take the Ultram as a preventitive and yo lessen the need for the 5mg Hydro that was also scripted. Time had passed and the Vicodin worked much better and Dr. started slowly lowering the number of Hydro's as apparently "I was taking too much" 20 5mg w/1 refill lasting 2 months before I called for the next refill!! Obviouslt Dr. wasn't very comfortable wth scripting
Too make a long story short I find myself still taking the Ultams scripted and too be honest I'm not sure they are realy doing all that much for me any more. I have heard they can be addicting as they are similar to opiates in the mechanism of action. So If I were to decide to quit quit am I going to go through withdrawls or anything??
I have since found an OP who obviously was much more compassionate and I now have a manageble amount of Hydro so I guess I no longer need the Ultram.
I guess I will get right to the bulk of my question, can Ultram cause tolerance seemingly all at once to something more potent such as Hydro?? I have had 7.5's and even recently 10's scripted more recent and they don't seem to have the same effect as they once used too. I went through a period where I stopped taking Hydro all together for a few months and now that I am recently undergoing another round of pain, It seems as if they just don't have the same effect, I even notice a bit more naseau thatn what I ever had before.
Almost seems hard to beleive before I could get by with just 1 5mg Vic sometimes maybe 2. Now it seems as if upwards of 20 even closer to 30 seems to give the same results. I know this reaction can't be be all related to the Hydro as I really have only First taken it less than a year ago and really on a on and off basis now, but have taken Ultram for 10 months straight however.
Anybody think Ultram could cause tolerance to something like Hydrocodome making it less effective, seeminlgy overnight?? Somebody with any information please help. If I asked my PCP they will most definitely question where I have gotten the Hydro again and I have a feeling they won't look to kindly on using a OP.
You'll have to forgive mt typos and rambling i'm running on only 2 hrs. sleep

Never been Wrong, though one time I thought I was; it turned out I was mistaken!
I have taken hydro and ultram for several years and it's my experience that you can build a tolerance to both. And you can have withdrawal symptoms from both. I have tried many things and different ways of taking these two together to manage my pain. I can usually tell a difference with the way the ultram works after a week or so. The hydro seems to lose it's effectiveness after only four days. I have a doctor that will give me 90 ultram a month and my op will give me 90 hydro a month. I go back and forth 4 days ultram then 4 days hydro. This seems to work best for me. The best thing for me about ultram is the way it completely stops the withdrawal symptoms from the hydro. I have stopped hydro cold turkey several times and it sucks. Keep in mind that I have been taking these for a long time. It could be totally different for someone that hasn't taken as many and I'm sure there are other factors that make a difference too. The 5 mg hydro lost its effectiveness for me very quickly. I went up to 7.5 and then to 10 within 6 months. Some people say that taking a "hydro holiday" helps this problem. That only works if you stop both hydro and ultram though. I haven't done this very often because of my pain level. If I have a week off of work or if I'm sick anyway and in bed I do stop everything.. but that is only once or twice a year. I'm sure there are lots of people that read this board that know more about why the tolerance thing happens between these two medicines and what can be done to help... I just know what I have been through.. hope it helps.
