Sleeping help
      #141571 - 02/24/04 11:10 PM

I need help to get to sleep – I can feel absolutely exhausted and then as soon as my head hits the pillow, my mind jumps into gear and I’m going through everything I’ve done that day and everything I’ve still got to do. If I go to sleep, I wake during the night with the same problem. I’ve tried ambien, which works but I’m worried it will lose it’s effectiveness if used on a regular basis so can someone suggest any alternatives?
Many thanks

Do you think you're suffering from anxiety? Your mind keeps racing, your brian never stops. Something like Paxil can help with that. But you would really need to see your doctor to get properly diagnosed. And it can have very funky side-effects.

Have you ever tried a muscle relaxer like Soma?

In my own experience of taking ambien often over a seven year period, it works as well now as it did on day one. Everybody reacts differently to drugs, but for me, ambien is the perfect sleeping aid.

i have had insomnia for years, and becasue of the "racing " thoughts as soon as i go to bed and try to shut my mind off its when it kicks into extra gear, i think of all the mistakes i made, my kids, my bills, my life! i have tried ambien and every single time i wake up with a headache! i been on dalmane for years but it also lost its effectiveness, xanex works ok if i take it an hour before bed helps me relax enough to fall asleep but then i wake around 2 am! and have to be to work at 8Am! eveyone tells me i always look tired. I am starting to give up hope, i been on every anti depressant out there! I think its just my life. ! Good luck , karen

I also suffer from sleepless nights. I don't wake up like you do, but I just can't ever get to sleep.
I have also tried them all.
The one I have found that works best for me is Temazepam.
I have been taking it for almost a year. I haven't had to increase. In fact, if you get it from an OP consult doc, they will only give 30. One a night is all that is needed.
Try it, it may just work for you.
I'd give up on the xanax, nothing but trouble in front of that. It also left me hungover, and had my co-workers asking me if I was ok!
Try temazepam...

I currently have success with serax. Weak but 2 seem to help. The other poster was right, stay away from Xanax except on weekends. You can get strung out real easy and withdrawls are dangerous. It also can give you antergrade amnesia.
On a long shot, before they managed to outlaw it, L-tryptophan put me out like a light and no hangover. Look for it on life extension sites.
Good luck

Well, many people point out that if you use benzos, to be prudent with the use, unless you are sitting on like 1000 of them, and don't have to worry about withdrawls. Don't listen when people tell you that you can take high dosages of Xanax every night for months on end...coming down from that can be horrible. Space out and minimize your doses, is my advice, and I speak from personal experience !

That said, have you tried the OTC hormone Melatonin ? Combined with some OTC antihistamine sleep aids and a glass of wine, it will put you OUT for 9 solid hours, albeit with some grogginess in the morning. Others might suggest going the herbal route, with valerian, kava kava, etc.

I empathise totaly!!Having been a cronic insomniac for years I've found that I become tolerant to almost any drug fairly quickly!!!
I now alternate between a range of drugs trying not to use a particular one more than once or twice a fortnight!!
Remember that quite a few drugs are from the same family (eg. benzos) so even when you only take each variety once or twice a fortnight you can still develop a tolerance!!

I use this formula:

day1: temazepam(2*20mg gel caps or 2 30mg tabs)
2: zopiclone(2*7.5mg tabs)
3: lorazepam(2*2mg tabs)
4: phenobarbital(2*60mg tabs)
5: stillnox(Ambien)(2*10mg tabs)
6: 2*10mg valiums and 2*sleepaids(OTC in Australia)
7: *NOTHING*
8: temazepam(2*20mg gel caps or 2 30mg tabs)
9: phenobarbital(2*60mg tabs)
10: 2*10mg valiums and 2*sleepaids(OTC in Australia)
11: zopiclone(2*7.5mg tabs)
12: lorazepam(2*2mg tabs)
13: stillnox(Ambien)((2*10mg tabs)
14: *NOTHING*

I have been using this formula for a couple of months now however if I find a particular drug is not working Ill stop taking it for a couple of weeks! There are numerous alternative sleep aids! Combining valium or klonopin with a mild OTC sleep aid can sometimes work!
I never take the Phenobarb if I need to be clear minded the following morning!
Surprisingly I find on the rest night where I take nothing I seem to sleep alright!!
I HAVE BEEN A CRONIC INSOMNIAC FOR MOST OF MY LIFE AND AFTER NORMISON(20MG GEL CAPSULE TEMAZEPAM) WAS MADE DIFFICULT TO GET I COULDN'T SLEEP PROPERLY FOR WEEKS!!!

A FELLOW DB MEMBER RECOMMENDED A SIMILAR SYSTEM TO THIS AND IT SEEMS TO WORK WELL!!
EXPERIMENT WITH WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!! IF A DRUG THAT USED TO WORK STOPS DOING SO GIVE IT A REST FOR A WHILE AND IT WILL PROBABLY WORK AGAIN!!

hOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE AS IT HAS HELPED ME!!

GO WITHOUT A GOOD NIGHTS REST FOR A WHILE AND YOU FEEL LIKE A WALKING ZOMBIE!LIKE YOU'VE LOST THE PLOT!!

Many many thanks everyone. What I’ve ordered in the end is
30 Xanax x 1mg
150 Ambien x 10mg
30 Imovane x 7.5mg
30 Zoploclone x 7.5mg

Not knowing much about them can anyone tell me which are the same type of drugs? The ambien I can normally split in half and that will usually give me 4 or 5 hours sleep which I can live with. I have taken heed of the warnings re Xanax and thought I’d limit that to once a week at the most, and not order any more.
The diphenhydramine seems to be available as Ultram (I thought that was a pain killer?) Sonata or Benadryl. Anyone give any indication which is best?
Thanks again people

By the way Atarax has also been suggested as a solution. Any comments?
Thanks

Ultram is Tramadol Hydrochloride. it has nothing to do with diphenhydramine, i dont know where you get that

diphenhydramine is one of the oldest cheapest and best sleep aids. some people dont respond well to it, most do.

when it is sold as a sleep aid like UNISOM or NYTOL or TYLONAL PM it is more money than when it is sold as an allergy pill. this is a marketing gimmick only. costco's 400 pills for $2.99 is the same as nytols 24 pills for 6 dollars. its all marketing gimmicks that stay in business because people are stupid and dont read lables

Thanks, I just did a search for diphenhydramine on an OP and the Ultram came up for some reason. I'm in the UK and pretty sure costco won't do the diphenhydramine over the counter here. I can order some Benadryl (which IS diphenhydramine isn't it??) for roughly a dollar each for 50mg size which isn't too bad. Is there any brand names for the antihistimine version if it's cheaper like that?

a dollar each? they should be approximately 1 cent each, or one hundred times less than what you get them for. just because a webpage comes up doesnt mean thats the active ingrediant.

you ordered two meds of the same thing? Imovane and Zopiclone??? oh dear

UK Gov site: Since 1993 centrally acting sedative antihistamines, diphenhydramine and promethazine have been available for sale, under the supervision of a pharmacist from pharmacies for the treatment of temporary sleeplessness.

Xanax(alprazolam),Serax,Restoril,Normison Klonopin,Rivotril,Lorazepam ect are all benzodiazepines!!
Basically any drug ending in pam or lam fall under this category!

Also ambien and imovane(zopiclone) are in the same family!

Also Phenobarbital is in the barbiturate family I can't think of any others but there are many!!

Hope this helps!!!!

Ah well, they’re ordered now – you can tell I don’t use them often can’t you?? I also have 30 Zolpidem, 10 Benadryl and 50 Atarax. I’ll just have to see how I go! Re the diphenhydramine anyone know a UK brand name for it if it’s available over the counter here?
Thanks

For SLEEP and PURELY SLEEP, I use Halcion (Triazolam). It works great, has a very, very short half-life, so I don't wake up drowsy, and keeps me asleep at night. Plus, I get to tell my parents that I am taking what Dahmer gave his victims before he ate them!
