Will OP's with medical records survive??? *****
      #143411 - 03/01/04 08:52 PM

We've all heard the news "Bush's new plan"... So let's start a discussion about OP's that use medical records or/ and Port-O-Medic's..

Do you think this will be enough?

Does anyone know more info about Bush's plan? Example: The new article states "Illegal OP's".. Does this mean the OP's that take detailed information from their patients have a chance? Or will this new bill look at all OP's as illegal?

Last but not least, I would like to hear from the OP's themselves..... Do you guys think having patient/ doctor consults via online camera would help out the grey area "face to face legal issues" ?

Any input from lawyers, OP's, Doctor's or anyone that has any insight is welcome..

Thanks in advance and let's hope this isn't the begining of the REAL end.

Tred =)

Telemedicine will not disappear; exactly the opposite is true, it is the wave of the future.

So what will happen to the current OP's?

Some will take their fortunes and deposit them offshore.....then the owners will move to the Cayman Islands never to be heard from again.

Some won't- they will change their rules and adapt, they will have varying levels of flexibility to compete with newcomers.

There will be a business model given by some government agency, the DEA or whoever, that lets OP owners know exactly what is legal and what is not; some OP's will follow that strictly, some will be more lax, some won't follow it at all and they'll get busted only to reappear 3 months later (sound familiar?).

But for anyone worried about their future access to painkillers- I have said it before, I will say it again- you *WILL* have a way to get them online. When there is a demand, there is a seller- it has been that way for centuries- that will never change, it is just the way humans are. The government can pass all the laws they want, there will always be someone willing to break the law for profit, if that needs to be the case.

So if you are an addict, find comfort in human nature- just make sure you have plenty of cash, I predict with harsher laws making the drugs harder to get, the prices will skyrocket. If you don't want to circumvent the legitimate channels, just know that if you can scam a brick-and-mortar doctor, you can scam an online doctor. Good actors and con men will still be here in the future.

If you are a chronic pain sufferer, telemedicine, in the future, will allow you to communicate with a compassionate pain management physician. I do not believe that the current drug war hysteria will last forever. I believe there will come a day when medical marijuana is legal, when doctors are not afraid to give out adequate pain medication, when addiction is understood and treated, when children get the right kind of drug education (or at least something other than the D.A.R.E. program), etc.

But if I'm wrong, I find comfort in knowing that there will always be people who blatantly disregard the law for profit- as long as people want to do drugs, there will be drug dealers. It would be a sad state of affairs if chronic pain sufferers had to buy drugs from a drug dealer, but I don't believe that will last forever.

Worst case scenario- you could always grow opium poppies, the government can't stop soil and poppy seeds from turning into opium.

Take a deep breath- everything is going to be ok. If they change the rules, you will adapt as well- it will never be so difficult to get that the future telemedicine providers can't profit off of it- that much I am certain of.

Its not a question of finding what you need. Its can you pay the price to aquire what you need. If you think OPs are expensive now, you could be in for a real shock this time next year. The more pressure put on the Drs who write these scripts, the less will write them. Its harder to get what you need now than it was at this time last year. Why would anyone expect it to be easier in the future?

Still the fears are valid, because some of us chronic pain sufferer's have actually found life again. It makes me sick to think this one life I have on this planet is dictated by a government that thinks they know best for me and all the rest of us. I have a real physical chronic problem that is helped out by medication. I guess all we can do is fight with the best tools we have.. Letters, protests and education to those that might be swayed into understanding the issue at hand.

Take care for now ya'll.. At least we all know we'ere not alone in this struggle.

I've said this before on other threads, or maybe just posed the question, but with the change in administration (Republican to Democrat) coming in January of 2005 the fear associated with pain management will subside. The current President is trying his very best to strike a chord with anyone he can find who has any notion of fear about a country on drugs. He does the same thing with terrorism--fear is the only way he sees that he can stay in office, but it won't work. This may be a little off-topic, but be patient, yawkaw is right--don't be afraid.
