Better sleeping pill: xanax or restoril?
      #143203 - 03/01/04 11:32 AM

I find that high dose xanax is more effective than normal or even high dose restoril in helping me sleep. I wonder how well 0.25mg of halcion would compare to these two drugs. Any help would be appreciated.

I recently began taking Restoril 30mg. I would say that it is effective when I am already tired...but, most of the time it takes 2 pills (60mg) to get me to fall asleep and stay asleep. I prefer Xanax, Ativan or Klonopin. My experience in this area is limited as I have only had insomnia for 6 months or so. I hope that this helps!!

I take 0.5mg Halcion to sleep, but only when I need it. Halcion does induce the same sleepy effect that Xanax does, but that's about it. I pop 2 pills, watch TV for 20 minutes and then feel tired. As soon as my head hits the pillow, I'm out. I wouldn't suggest taking Halcion for anything else other than sleep, and that's it.

Comparing Xanax to Halcion is like apples and oranges.

There are basically two kinds of sleep disorders: inability to fall asleep, and inability to sleep long enough. The treatment should match the type of disorder.

Halcion and Restoril are true sleeping pills. Xanax is not really a sleeping pill, but its sedative effect can be helpful for those who have trouble falling asleep. Xanax has a short halflife so it won't do much good for those who can't stay asleep long enough. I've also read that Xanax can interfere with the full sleep cycle and it seems well accepted that it can cause rebound anxiety or even panic attacks. There are many who consider it a dangerous drug, but it works for some.

Ambien is usually the frontline drug for insomnia if you can afford it. Sonata is the on-patent drug for people who wake up early and want an extra hour or two. Restoril is off patent and cheaper than Ambien and probably the most similar in effect to Ambien. Halcion is a very potent drug that can linger on into the next day, very unlike Ambien.

Some doctors might prescribe Valium or Xanax for insomnia but that's off-label. Why not try the true sleeping pills first? They go Ambien, Restoril, and then Halcion. After that they'll usually try either the benzo tranqs or trazadone depending on the type of sleep problem.

Xanax would not be a good choice if the problem was early waking, because of its short halflife. Halcion might get the nod for that one.

The FDA just gave tentative approval to a new insomnia drug named Estorra:

Whatever works for you is best.
