I have been around doctors for a long time and around pain for just a little less. I have gone through a great learning process with my disabled ex wife and now with myself. I find that pain in the eyes of a medical professional seems (to me) to be given a lower value or less intensity than it really has. I went with my mother-in-law once to her back doctor (she had 17 back surgeries during her 84 years) and when he asked her to rate her pain from 1 to 10 (1 is better) she answered, if you felt like me you wouldn't be at work today. I still don't think he understood but gave her the next level of pain meds saying that at her age it wouldn't matter if she got addicted to her medication. What's wrong with this picture, is it just my experience or are all the people including the medical staff incapable of understanding real pain? Why do we have to bleed out our eyes or something to get the recognition we need. I hope to find some understanding from all the experience on this board Thanks for listening.

Orgart,
Boy did you hit that right on the nose, I love my PCP hes one of the nicest drs I have ever met, he's very thorough and always takes his time to make sure he explains every little detail in a way you understand, His clients are mostly ederly so that may be why but when it comes to pain ,meds, forget it. I think I am one of the very few if not the only younger patients he has, with all my problems he keeps telling me I am a strong healthy young girl and I will get better. (Yeah Right) He refers me out to other drs for my condition so he does understand that I am hurt, but what I dont understand is why he wont treat me when it comes to pain??? I know I could change Drs but I really don't want to, He really is a good Dr but he just will not deal with my back and neck issues, He's referred me all over the place but for the most part the answer is surgery which I do not want. My PT is great and I think with her help I will get better but in the interim I guess they just expect me to suffer?? What I really dont understand is why ER drs are so sympathetic when it comes to pain? Maybe its because they are only treating you for short term? I dont know but it baffles me that I can have the back and neck injuries that I have and the Drs will only prescribe me Motrin and Flexeril? But yet you go to the ER with a sprained arm and they have no problem prescribing vicodin??? I didnt even ask for it......I asked for Motrin while I was waiting to be seen but that was all. I guess its because they prescribe such small amounts but it still does not make any sense........Obviously Drs do understand we have pain I just think they are scared they will lose their livelyhood if they prescribe narcotics, which I can understand but the gov has this so twisted it's totally sadistic(sp?) Show me one time that a CP patient looking for pain medication ever showed any drugseeking behaviors? Its getting to the point that it almost seems surreal. People with real issues should not have to live like this, you never see a Headline that reads "Back pain sufferer holds up local pharmacy"!!! No, what you see are people in chronic pain getting to the point they cant deal with it anymore and taking their own lives to escape the pain......this is a warped society we live in people, its uncaring, sadistic, and unfair and things only seem to be getting worse. The Feds need to be going after the illicit drug scene not Drs who treat patients that have legitimate pain, I dont understand why this is happening, theres proof the pain is real, we have all been thru the numerous tests, with all the proof to document our pain, and what are our options in the end......Surgery which MAY help or you may be one of the really lucky people that end up with scar tissue and end up with more pain then when you started OR you can get Monster size needles jammed into your back that for some only give relief for a couple of days. But god forbid you take a pill, oh god no, you will become an addict.......if you are not able to manage your pain you have less of a chance of getting better, I for one do not want to go under the knife, I go to PT and I dont care if I have to go for year to get better, I will, I am not going to risk making my injuries worse.......but this takes time and during this time we are supposed to just suffer, Im sorry motrin and flexaril just do not work, plain and simple, they dont for me anyway. So what are the options? I have to go to work everyday, and I sit all day long so by the end of the day I hurt, Bad! Some people will give in, go on SSI and suffer at home but I can not do that, I am a single mother and I cant survive on a fixed income. But for some thats what they have to do because the pain is so bad they cant take it.....now that makes alot of sense doesn't it? If their pain was managed correctly they could continue to function and be productive......go figure? this counrty is a mess they would rather see people become unfunctional and drain an already over burdened debt, and the really sad thing is, the ones that suffer are our elderly, they get less and less because the money that they contributed to working all their lifes is getting thinner and thinner. I love my country but we have such a mess when it comes to our goverment, its twisted and unfair. They should be spending their time and our money on many other things rather then going after MDs that THEY feel should not prescribe narcotic pain relief. Just as there are laws that seperate Religon from Government there should also be laws that do the same with The Medical field, I think MDs are more then capeable of deciding who is truly suffering and who is just looking for drugs, the problem is they are scared, I dont blame them, If I had spent all the money and time and hard work that it takes to become a physician, I too would be afraid to lose my right to practice, wouldnt you? Well I have gone on enough and Im not saying anything that you all dont already know, and I just realized that I am under the wrong forum for this, I was just responding to the above poster, so Mods if you delete this I understand.....take care everyone....Im off to another fun and pain filled day of h***!!!!!

It's really too bad that Dr's can't just prescribe as they feel the need, but rather have to worry about the DEA pulling their license, or getting sued by some lawyer that thinks about nothing more than how much money he(she) can put in his(her) pocket with no thought about who they're actually hurting.
