Changing Meds
      #142090 - 02/26/04 12:59 PM

I have been taking codeine (Fiorinal #3) for my migraines and it helps with my sciatica too. My new MD prescribed Vicodin. I have not been taking Hydro, only Fiorinal #3. I am not sure I want to switch to the Hydro if the codeine works for me but I like the idea of using the meds my Doc gives me (in way too small amounts) when ordering from my OP. I did try the Vicodin Rx the Doc gave me but am not finding much relief, I have never found Tylenol to be very effective for me. I tolerate Aspirin fine and do enjoy an adult beverage from time to time. The "APAP causing liver damage' thing worries me and hydro seems to make my head hurt/tummy sick. Do you think I should just give the Vicodin a real shot, using it instead of the F#3, if I stick with it and maybe it will work fine once I am used to the new med? If I had a stronger hydro with less APAP would that work better than Vicodin? Any advice would be appreciated.

What kind of vicoden do you have? There is the regular 5/500, the ES 7.5/750 and the HP 10/660 (I think) Obviously it depends on the amount how much relief it will give you. In my opinion, if codeine works for you, the vicoden should help even more, even if it is the lowest dose; I find hydro to be much stronger than codeine; codeine does nothing at all for me! That said, if the codeine is still working for you, why switch to a stronger med? I wouldn't! Tolerance builds quickly, save the stronger meds for when you really need them, if you start taking a stronger med before you have to, you will just build a tolerance quicker. I love hydro for the pain relief it gives, but I hate all that comes with it; tolerance, dependance, etc. If it's not necessary, I wouldn't take it. I wouldn't get rid of it either, save it for when you need it, it should last a while. Also, if you are not used to such a strong med, it will bother your tummy and head; you could take it with a little food (piece of toast, etc) and that should help the tummy problem, it should go away after your body gets used to it, that happens pretty quickly. Anyway, this is all JMO, but I hope it helps some!

The Vicodin is 5/500. It certainly does not seem stronger than Fiorinal #3 to me. I mean the Vicodin does not give me a high/euphoric feeling but I have never taken more than one in a day. I will take 2 to 4 F #3 a day if needed, no foggy feeling. Is the 5mg hydro stronger than the equivilant of 30mg Codeine?

Lilly-

Comparing the two is like asking people if oranges or apples taste better. Some say apples, some say oranges. Some say oranges give them heartburn so they don't eat them. Others don't like apples because they go brown so quickly, etc.

If codeine works for you, I'd stick with it. Hydro is known for headaches and sleeplessness (among other things.) I'd try them for a few days and see if they eventually start working better for you. If not, you can call your doc and at least say you;ve tried it and it just wasn't as effective for your pain as the Fiorinal/cet.
