fiorinal contains aspirin, and fioricet has acetominophen, but they both contain butalbital and caffeine. hope this helps.

Yeah and isn't there some weirdness in their scheduling- Fioricet is unscheduled, but Fiorinal is (federally I think)?
Anyone know abuout that? It's one of the weird gotchas- I could totally be wrong and this and I do realize it makes no sense- but I remember reading about this on DB and elsewhere.
Trampy or BillyIll can chime in maybe and 'splain?

If I'm not mistaken, it's because it can come with or without codiene

The only reason for the different classification is that APAP (Acetaminophen) is toxic in much smaller doses than ASA (Acetylsalicylic Acid aka Aspirin), which therefore mitigates the abuse potential of the Butalbital, which is a barbituate.
ASA can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, even causing serious erosion over the long-term in higher doses, and it's blood-thinning properties are legendary; but it has virtually no appreciable single-dose or cumulative toxicity compared to APAP's potential to irreparably damage the liver relatively easily.
It's actually a very similar concept to hydrocodone formulations. As a compound, hydrocodone is a Schedule II controlled substance. However, the inclusion of APAP, in addition to APAP's own analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, mitigates its abuse and overdose potential sufficently for regulators to classify these products in Schedule III.
One of pharmacy's great curiosities revealed. Sorry for the anti-climax.

sure wish one could order butalbital with little or no APAP. can't tolerate the aspirin to take fiorinal instead.

I have been taking fiorinal for about 2 years now; the only thing that will dull my cervical headaches. If you are taking any APAP, ACET, you don't want the fioricet. These things have been a miracle for me because I get headaches for 1-3 days at a time.
They are offered with codeine, but I just use the ones without. I much prefer the capsules to the pills, because they work much better and faster.
The only ingredient that is different is the fiorinal has aspirin, which is good for me because tylenol GIVES me a headache.
They are controlled (fiorinal) but for me, they are a lifesaver. Hope this helps at least a little.
Good luck,
