If you don't mind me asking, which preventive med are you on? Elavil? Neurontin?
Fioricet might help, I've found it to be a good headache med. Try http://www.rxmedweb.com , all you have to do is fill out a questionnaire.
Fioricet's got butalbital (a barbiturate), caffeine, and tylenol. See how it affects you first if you've never taken it, before doing something like driving.
The next step up would be Fioricet w/ codeine, which you can get from most OP's.
Tylenol w/ codeine or hydro would be the next med to try, though if the other can adequately treat the headache, why bother?
Btw- did you give consideration to what I mentioned in our PM's? Hit me back and let me know if you need more advice.

Be careful of taking too much narcotic based medication for headache relief. This can lead to something called rebound headache. For a good discussion of this, see:

Ultram (tramadol) has helped my bad headaches. You can get it at pretty much every OP. I hope you find something that works for you!

Rxmedweb is pretty good, reliable- one of those "soft" op's that don't sell hydro, but sell the other stuff with a questionnaire. I know a bunch of these places if you wanna price-compare.
I'll get to your PM later today, I promise- gotta run out in a little bit.

This is just my opinion. I have suffered migraines for years, since I was 15 years old. I found about Fioriciet about 10 years ago and will dream of taking nothing else for my head problems. The catch is though, as soon as you start to feel a headache coming on you have to take the Fioricet. If you have a full blown migraine it WILL make it go away, but taking it when you feel the headache coming on elimnates the migraine altogether and you won't have to suffer that severe pain. This is just my experience, but I hope it can be helpful to you.

Are your daily headaches new onset?? If so, you may want to consult your MD before trying a new medication. Often headaches are an indication of another problem that might need to be treated. For example, have you had your vision checked lately? Since you are currently on a medication to "discourage" the headache from coming in the first place, perhaps that medication is no longer effective and you need a different prescription. If your current MD isn't supportive, you may want to consult a neurologist who can better treat your headaches. It's just a suggestion, but you might want to get to the root of the cause before you self-prescribe. You sure don't want to make the situation worse. Good luck....

I, too, have been a migraine sufferer since I was 14. I also get just "bad" headaches (some from high blood pressure.)
No matter what kind of headache I get, this basic recipe works 99.9% of the time (and I've gone the IM Demerol, Fioricet with codeine, etc. ad nauseum route before without much luck) is:
2 Excedrin Migraine
1 or 2 Phenergan (anti-nausea med)
lay down in dark room (although I don't always have to do this)
Like I said, VERY EFFECTIVE for almost all of my headaches and completely non-narcotic---no rebound headaches.
Good luck finding something that works.

I had migraines all my life off and on. I do not have them anymore.....why? The only thing I can 99.99% attribute it to.....Effexor XR.
Ever since I've been on it, not one headache, it's been a miracle for me!
And has taken care of some other issues very well also! I take 75mg a day in the morning. Have been on it for about 6 months and believe me I wouldv'e had a migraine by now I'd get them very often.

While I have to take Imitrex or Axert for my migraines my daughter has yet to be diagnosed. She was waking up with a headache every morning. We seem to have found a routine that is helping for now. She takes valarian and feverfew capsules at night an hour before she goes to sleep. The doctor has Rx'd Tylenol 4 for when this does not work, but she is having remarkable luck with this.
