That is a VERY common side-effect.

My friend had this side effect really bad, she would just sit and itch her body for a few hours, terrible thing.
I personally do not have any side effects, thank god!

It won't make me itchy for weeks. Then I will manage to go longer than usual without it, finally take it, and claw myself till my husband threatens to duct tape my hands together.

Itchiness (is that a word?) is a side effect you should watch and report to your doctor. Reading the prescribing information on codeine or hydro says that if you have an itch or a rash, be really careful because you could end up in anaphylactic shock (very very bad thing)if you take it again.
It's weird - codeine makes me itch, hydro doesn't. For my mom, it's the other way around.
Just be careful.

T#3 makes me itch terribly, but anything higher, 7.5, 10/325 doesn't. Why would a stronger strength of hydro make me itch and T3, lowest form of life out there, doesn't? Guess it's just your body chemistry.

Itching is an allergic reaction to the medicine. Change to another form of codiene or other medication.
Sorry.

Hydro no but let me take a T4 and whoooo weee i itch like a dog with fleas.I found that a benadryl taken about 20 mins before taking any med that causes that annoying itch will basically take care of that problem...but i must stress that this could cause you to feel more sleepy than you normaly would so do your driving ahead of time.

Yes, it's horrible. I've tried benadryl with no relief, is there another med that could help??

A friend of mine has a bad reaction to codeine (itching/rash) but has no reaction to hydro. His MD told him that it was possible to be allergic to one and not the other even though they're chemically similar. Sounds like it's definitely possible from reading your posts. Hydro will make me itch only if I take it at an increased dosage.

Taking an aspirin tab 30 minutes before an opiate will also relieve the itching.

The itching is a side effect, but not necessarily an "allergic reaction". Most, but not all, people are able to take Benadryl concurrently with hydrocodone to lessen the itching. Generally speaking, if the itching is accompanied by a rash or similar skin "breakout" it is considered an allergic reaction. If the itching is accompanied by any difficulty breathing or significant mental status changes, the med should NOT be taken again and you should get to an ER STAT for a reversal agent.

I take Hydro myself and get a moderate amount of the itchiness, especially around my scalp, and around the area covered by my beard. I don't see this as an allergic reaction because there is no rash or anything like that. I've found that using T-Gel Extra Strength Shampoo seems to ease the worst of the scalp (and beard) itching to a point that, with a little self control and constant reminders NOT to scratch, I am okay. Now, if I was getting a rash or something worse, I'd either lower the dosage or get off the Hydro.
Now and then I get the skin itch, and Gold Bond Anti-Itch cream seems to ease that quite well. Again no rash or anything of that nature. So I am assuming it is is nothing more than a side effect of taking Hydro. The itching was much worse when I first started taking Hydro, but now....after some years on Hydro, the side effects are minimal.
Hope this helps.

I have noticed that when I take over the recommended dosage (which is not often) but, when I am having an endometriosis flare up or attack is what I would like to call it. The pain is so bad that I take an extra pill to make the pain stop. I notice that when I do this after a while I will itch. I just started noticing that the hydro must be the cause. Normally this does not happen. Although I don't get a rash and I don't think I am over using the medicine because I am prescribed 3 a day and if I take 4 that day I will begin to itch. But, I know alot of people that are prescribed 4 a day so maybe my body is not use to the increase. Don't know but glad to here I am not alone.

I get the "itchies" for a few days whenever my dose increases. Doesn't matter WHAT opiate it is.
Also, my itching is primarily facial--like having a cat hair on your nose or such.
Codeine, however, makes me want to literally rip my skin off--but that's an allergy (accompanies by a head-to-toe rash!)
