Security issue with Pharmacy -- Please Read
      #136490 - 02/12/04 01:25 PM

I am not going to post which pharmacy this was (Dasani was informed that posting about recorded lines would be considered slander and since this might be similar territory, i don't want to get in trouble) but I wanted to share my experience so that everyone can be more informed about their privacy!

I was desperately trying to get through at one pharmacy and no one, i mean NO ONE picked up for days. in an attempt to get a real person's extension i did the old, press # when the recorded message played and got to a directory of all the extenions. here is where the problem came: i was trying every single person over and over trying to get through (i dont think i need to explain how aggravating it is to need to talk to someone and they refuse to answer) and quite by accident found myself inside on of the employee's voice mail box! i was trying to leave a message and they must not of had a password on their extension, but before i hung up, i realized that i was privvy to several voice mails!!!

now i know i can be trusted and i didnt write anyone's name or number down, and quite frankly, i didnt want to listen to even one message, so i quickly hung up. but we all know some people cannot be trusted!! name, address, phone number and other personal, PERSONAL information was available to me. i don't know about you, but i know the type of info i leave on voice mail, since oftentimes its the only way to communicate, and i would not want anyone being able to get that! it could have been anyone of you that was on there!

so, my point is, be careful with what you leave on voice mail...its NOT safe. and like i said, i didnt listen to the messages but more or less sat there shocked for a few seconds, in complete disbelief that someone could be so careless. scary.....

i debated posting this info b/c i didnt want to get accused of being a snoop, but i realized that if i did this by accident, anyone could. id rather let people know about the securtiy problem. i dont honestly remember how it happend and it was quite by accident, but someone else could easliy do the same thing.

Bean, I get the main part of your post - bad security.

But wanted to let people know (if they are not history majors) that today is Abe Lincoln's birthday and many companies and government offices are closed!

OMG... you really need to think about letting us know which pharmacy this is, this is HUGE. Thank YOU for letting us know, I cannot imagine anyone accusing you of anything by giving us this info.

I think the point is that it could happen anywhere....not just that particular pharmacy. JMO Catmom

beans, thanks for the heads up. I am like you. I get so frustrated with these automated answering things I just start pushing numbers to get a person. Never can tell where it will take you.In your instance to some pretty private stuff. You didn't listen, thats commendable. Reminds me of waiting in line at confession when I was younger and someone would be talking too loud. Everybody would start coughing to drown out the persons confession. turcica

Actually, I think it's rare that ANY business would be so CARELESS as to have their phone system set up so that customers could get access to VM messages, let alone one that deals with healthcare.

It's so outrageous that HIPPA doesn't even cover this scenario. LOLOL

I must say that I'm surprised more people aren't worried about this....maybe it's because I heard it first hand, but we are talking personal information at the fingertips of anyone who wants it. We are all anonymous here on the boards, but on voicemail, we are very real and very vulnrable. I have tried emailing this pharmacy several times for an order, and have gotten no response. I don't know that even emailing them about it would make much of a difference. Oh well...guess no one cares that someone out there could potentially know their prescription requests, name and phone number as well as "business propositions" that were left on vm. I myself am concered so I'm trying to get ahold of people at the pharm. Until then, I'd be careful about what you leave on vm.
