Oh my gosh, I had Shingles in June, in the 7th month of my pregnancy. Wow, I have posted on 2 things today that I have had during pregnancy, to painful conditions, kidney stones and Shingles. They thought it was a spider bite at first, but turned out to be shingles on my back and thigh. It was due to stress and a lowered immune system due to the pregnancy. Anyway the doctor prescribed Famvir and Percocet. Famvir doesn't do alot unless you start taking it right away. It helps the duration and keeps it from spreading too bad. You need to go see the doctor on this. I don't know what area is affected, but it can get really serious if near your face/eyes. I would get to the doctor asap. Good luck. I felt like my ribs had been kicked in over and over, on top of being pregnant. IT WAS HORRIBLE!

I just got over the shingles. They were brought on due to my insomnia and going 3-4 days without sleep and it just wore my body down. It was terrible, painful indeed. I am still not a 100% but slowly getting there. I wish you a quick recovery but usually shingles insist on staying around a lot longer than we would like. Take care of yourself. Zow

Hi Anxiety, have you went to the DR's to have them check you out? I feel so bad for you i dont know much about shingles but I have heard they are very painful & i think that is also a nerve type condition, not sure though? Do you have a regular PCP?
Im not really sure what type meds would relieve pain like that, thats why I asked if you went to the Dr's I couldnt imagine they wouldnt help you with some pain meds on a temp. basis but then again it wouldn't suprise me these days how Dr's are. Maybe someone else will post that has had shingles that know what will work for that kind of pain.

For those posters who do not know what shingles is, this might help:
Quote:
What is Shingles?
Shingles is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles occurs in people who have had chickenpox and represents a reactivation of the dormant varicella-zoster virus. The disease generally affects the elderly, although it occasionally occurs in younger and/or immunodeficient individuals. The first sign is usually a tingling feeling, itchiness, or stabbing pain on the skin. After a few days, a rash appears as a band or patch of raised dots on the side of the trunk or face. The rash develops into small, fluid-filled blisters which begin to dry out and crust over within several days. When the rash is at its peak, symptoms can range from mild itching to extreme and intense pain. Contact with a person with shingles may cause chickenpox (but not shingles) in someone who has never had chickenpox before.
Yes, shingles is very painful, and it does resemble other skin conditions. It is very important, very important, to have it looked at by a physician. This is something that can go on for months, even years, if not properly attended to. And there is always a possibility of severe nerve involvement.
Even with the cautious docs we have seen of late, physicians, once the disease is confirmed, will prescribe medications for the outbreak and the pain. For this reason, I'd not hesitate to see my local doc with this disease.
Do be careful hon, this is nothing to mess with.
Take care,

More info HERE
Quote:
Is there any treatment?
Treatment for shingles includes antiviral drugs, steroids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and topical agents. The severity and duration of an attack of shingles can be significantly reduced by immediate treatment with the antiviral drugs acyclovir, valacyclovir or famcyclovir. These drugs may also help stave off the painful aftereffects of shingles known as postherpetic neuralgia.
What is the prognosis?
Although shingles can be very painful and itchy, it is not generally dangerous to healthy individuals and it usually resolves without complications. The rash and pain usually go away within 3 to 5 weeks. Sometimes serious effects including partial facial paralysis (usually temporary), ear damage, or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) may occur. Persons with shingles on the upper half of the face should seek medical attention immediately as the virus may cause serious damage to the eyes. Most people who have shingles have only one bout with the disease in their lifetime. However, individuals with impaired immune systems, i.e., people with AIDS or cancer, may suffer repeated episodes.

Go to the DR! My 80 yo dad got shingles last year and had to go to the ER because it was a weekend. The docs seem to realize how unbearable it is b/c they gave him like 60 vicodin in addition to the antivirals. It took so long to get better, he had a few more scrips for vicodin from his tight fisted PCP before he ended up on neurontin.
Depending on where it is though, it can cause permanent damage to your nerves or your eyes. Please get it looked at.

Yesterday, while I was waiting for my procedure, I heard my PM doc discussing a case of shingles-related nerve damage with another doctor. He put the patient on Neurontin and amitriptyline with instructions for the patient to go to a specific ER for flare-ups to receive "narcotics and antiviral" meds.

I hope you went to the doctor right away. I went before the shingles actually broke out, and I complained that my left side hurt SO bad. My old dr. said it must be the way I slept on it. That was his standard explanation for just about everything.
Two days later, I barged in and said "The way I slept on it, huh?" When I raised my t-shirt, he said, "Shingles."
Yeah - I knew what it was.
What they did for me was give me acyclovir and vicoden for a week, and they were pretty much gone. I will never forget how my Dad suffered from the aftereffects from shingles because the anti-viral medicine wasn't available.
Let us know how you are.

Yes, please let us know how you are.
My Mom had this about a year ago and she was in horrible pain. What made it worse is she is over 80, and had a very bad car accident a few months before where she lost an eye. Along with many other bad injuries. Then she gets shingles right as she's starting to feel some better.
Sh said shingles hurt worse than her other injuries.
