I had the C5/C6 fusion about 3 three years ago. I also had limited motion and lots of pain in my arm because it was pressing on a nerve. I can tell you that as soon as I woke up after the surgery, I already felt a million times better, even accounting for the pain from the surgery itself.

I was out of work for 6 weeks after surgery, but I probably could have gone back sooner if I had wanted to. You'll feel like you don't want to swallow for a while, but that goes away.

I still have lingering problems, pain and numbness in my hand, but that is because I put the surgery off for too long which caused permanent nerve damage.

Are they going in through the front of your neck? That's how they did mine, and you can't even see the scar because they went in right where there is a natural crease in my neck.

Don't be scared, I think you will be happy with the results.

You can PM me if you have any other specific questions.

J

John: I have my C5C6C7 fusion with plates and three screws just a little over three months ago and I do understand your fears, I remember being so nervous the closer to my surgery date. Although I had four previous lower back surgergies with hardware, this one had me scared because of the cutting on my throat(had anterior ACDF).

I can promise you it was a piece of cake compared to all my other surgeries. Yes, there was a little problem with swallowing afterwards but ice-cream was really nice. I didn't have to wear a brace and only spent one night in hospital, there was only minor pain compared to the pain I was in before surgery. I do know one thing that you might want to keep in mind is if your a person who likes to sleep on their stomach, that is definitely a no no after surgery. Good Luck with your surgery and feel free to PM me if you have any questions...

I had the same surgery two and a half years ago. It really isn't bad. I didn't have to wear a brace unless I was going to be in a large crowd or riding in a car. I didn't have too much pain and after three weeks felt pretty good. It helped my numbness quite a bit but I still have some pain. I have noticed my numbness coming back though and I am not sure why. The doctor said I could have more problems a few years down the road.
Good luck and don't worry. It really isn't too bad. I have heard back surgery takes a lot longer to recover from.
