Hi,
Newbie here, just wondering if anyone has found something that relieves their pain as well as Oxy....I haven't, and I'm not able to get any more, at least not with my current doc, I'm hurting and I'm not sure what to do next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you try MS contin. That stuff works pretty good when dosed in the correct amount.

For years I have been seeing a local Pain Management Physician. Due to the degenerative nature of my disease he has just recently changed my medication to Kadian SR. Kadian SR is morphine sulfate (sustained release), which is basically the same as MS Contin but manufactured by a different pharmaceutical company. It has done wonders for me, whereas I could not even leave the house due to the pain but since I have been on Kadian (about 2 months) I am able to leave the house and do grocery shopping, which is a big step for me.
My Pain Management physician is excellent and takes the time to listen and takes your opinion into consideration when prescribing. I, myself, being in the medical field know that this is rare when dealing with most physicians.
I wish you luck in locating a physician that will listen to your opinion and your needs based on your diagnosis that will help you alleviate most of the pain you are having.
I have been very lucky in this respect as I have never had to accur the expense of OP consults and meds.
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi all,
OHD, the reason I can;t get any more oxy's is that my doc is an idiot. I just need to find an new doc that understands what I need. I have a very high tolerance (unfortunately) and nothing else really helps.

disciple,
MSContin is time-released morphine. MS stands for Morphine Sulfate, the contin comes from 'continuous release'.
Good drug, you need to watch out for something though- morphine taken orally has horrible bioavailability (meaning it requires more morphine for an oral dose than it does for other routes of ingestion, like a shot). A good PM (and most doctors) should be aware of this, though some are apparently ignorant of it.

Yes and no.
MS-Contin has problems that are not found in Oxy specifically "first pass bioavailability" in which as much as 60% of the morphine sulfate is destroyed by your liver. So if you take a 30mg pill, your body will actually get only about 10mg worth of active the ingredient.
Also, the onset time is between 1 and 1 1/2 hours. This is a long, long time to wait for pain relief. Even if you "break the rules" and chew them, there is still a long delay before the morphine is absorbed in the intestines.
And, like Oxy, MS loses its effectiveness rather quickly. I know of one patient that went from 15mg to 90mg (daily) just because he developed a normal tolerance as time went by. This creates other problems, such as constipation, that require stool softeners and laxitives before long to prevent blockage.
The good news is that MS-Contin is much less controversial and slightly easier to get perscribed for chronic pain. And if used IV it is very, very effective.
That's probably why Oxy was developed.
