Amount of Days between refills?"Please Reply"
      #133491 - 02/02/04 12:53 PM

Hey everyone. I have a question for you. In the past if I am not mistaken my meds were available for refill on about day 30. I did my consult almost a month ago and will be due for my 1st refill soon. I called the Pharmacy to change my address and just inquired when I could request my refill. He gave me a date which is only day 25. If I request the meds on the day he told me which is day 25 and he fills it and ships it Overnight, I will recieve it on day 26.

By no means am I complaining, I really dont know the rules and regulations on refills. How many days early they can be filled or whatever. I didnt ask for a early refill by no means, I just inquired when the refill would be available.

But then again just because I request it on day 25 doesnt mean they will fill it on that day. He didnt mention me requesting it and them holding it or anything.

Well if anyone can clarify this for me I would appreciate it. I just want to know in the future when to request my refills.

The Pharmacy I am using is TDI PHARMACY
thanks,

MB

The pharmacies are different in their policies. Some fill as early as the 23rd day others as late as the 27th. I have never heard of ANY pharmacy making you wait to day 30. If that were the case, by the time the meds shipped and arrived, you would be out (based on a 30 day prescription). United fills at the 23rd day, Apothysis at the 27th (unless something has changed). If you tell us which pharmacy you are using, I'm sure that someone here could give you the specifics.

Refill frequency may be entirely at the discretion of the pharmacy, subject to serveral provisions which can or may mitigate the pharmacy's discretion.

There is no universal applicable regulation. However, as part of virtually all licensure requirements, pharmacies are charged with performing their profession in the best interests of its customers. Because substances are most typically controlled due to their abuse potential, regulating the rate at which it dispenses refills is one means by which a pharmacy complies with its "best interest" standard of care requirement. More clearly stated, the wholesale frequent dispensation of refills is a significant indicator of potential diversion and abuse; and facilitating the practice without reasonable justification jeopardizes a pharmacist's or pharmacy's licensure.

Physicians can restrict the rate at which pharmacies may refill the prescriptions as well. Whether it is to discourage diversion, protect from overdose, or simplify dosing, prescribers may, although rarely do, issue refills with specific refill intervals.

Insurance companies impose the most common refill restrictions. Most will only cover a specific days' supply per fill, (typically 30 for retail pharmacies and 90 for mail-order chronic care medications), as a means of ensuring that the patient receives no more medication at a reasonable interval, for which it would have to reimburse the pharmacy, than is needed. Insurers also dissuade the stockpiling, diversion, or otherwise unnecessary coverage or prescriptions by requiring, in most cases, that it will cover refills only after consumption of 75% of the previous fill according to its dosage schedule.

This has become the common standard for determining "refill dates", and while a pharmacy may choose to dispense a refill to a customer with the understanding that it will not be insured, in the absence of a specific need, most simply refer the customer to return on the appropriate date as a matter of policy. While most use approximately 75% consumption as their refill threshholds, many pharmacies choose to implement a higher consumption level for controlled medications. Automatically determining refill intervals based on a variety of criteria is a standard parameter feature in virtually every Pharmacy Mangement System, or instantly occurs vitually universally at the insurer as part of its DUR (drug utilization review) if the prescription is submitted for reimbursement.

While these standards apply to virtually every prescription dispensed, the ultimate dispensing discretion is up to the pharmacy itself, and eventually the individual pharmacist.

Anybody know St. Pete's policy? Is it 25 days or can you refill sooner?

Hi Malibu-if the pharmacy told you the reill is the 25th day than that's exactely what it is and YOU WILL receive it on the 26th day.

Bones-St Petes refill policy is strictly 25 days.
Hope this helps you both-

Summer

I used to use TDI and when the refill landed on a Saturday they did fill my script on the 23rd. day so I didn't have to pay Saturday shipping..I just recently changed to United and was wondering the best way to do my refill with them. Does anyone know their Internet address. Has many other people ordered their refill on the 23rd day with United...Actually United costs a little over a dollar more than TDI does for the same medication..
